Desi foods, what hope do we have?

yup what Lusi said..

I dont know about European labeling specifics as well, my CPG work has been in North America. There are some huge issues with labeling here. whole grain, organic, low fat, fat free, etc etc, ripe for abuse, because of lax guidelines and then the ability of CPG companies to put whatever they can come up with on their containers.

Europe in general is much tougher from what I know, a good example of this is the shrinkwrap used on meats, veggies etc. the one in EU has specific guidelines on restricted substances, in US walmart started doing the same voluntarily a few years ago, not sure about others, have not checked up on that in a few years

Re: Desi foods, what hope do we have?

hmm .. interesting .. the packed whole wheat atta we get here(M.E.) says nothing in ingredients but "whole wheat flour’ but it was a bit too white to be whole wheat and I didn’t like the taste of it so we switched to another kind which is sold in supermarkets in loose form(unpacked). You can see all the bran(brown part) in it and it is richer in taste too. Funny though, it’s called *‘dou *(2)number atta’ :hehe:

Re: Desi foods, what hope do we have?

Ach...cmo'n guys...this discussion can go endless and reaching nowhere...just rely on your palate (though not when drunk or intoxicated)...your palate will tell you what your body need and what not...and in how much quantity of any food-type (recipe or dish) at some certain aphrodite point... :)

it can also go in the direction of how to make things in a more healthy manner, from how its cooked to ingredients, choice of oil, cuts of meat, amount of meat, etc etc.

this is pretty important, read up some studies on aging issues of Pakistani expat population and the havoc the diet is playing on people's health

I think...the Pakistani cooking style is still pretty unhealthy...our cooking manners tend to lose lots of nutritional values of food...especially overuse of *masalas...*over-cooking of vegetables and all kinds of meats...

I think the best would be:

  • Meats and daals cooking time should be 10-15 minutes...

  • Vegetables should be steamed and later added to the meats or placed next to them...

  • Less milawat...especially in Pakistan...lol

PS: A very tasteful meal is not necessarily healthy...like I like among other things...gulab jamins though...but I guess I have enjoyed just 2 pieces of them in the last 6 years...and I enjoy...in the summer sometimes...just 2 ice creams on yearly basis... :D
