Re: Desi delicacy
Let me back track a little and correct myself…a “delicacy” refers to a food that is special or not common in every day circumstances.
In Western/European cusine some delicacies would be caviar, truffles, ramps, escargot, foie gras, kobe beef, iberian ham, vintage wines etc. In Eastern/Asian cuisines shark fin soup, uni (sea urchin), sea cucumbers, etc.
So I agree that halwa poori, biryani and haleem should not be classified as delicacies as they are also considered regular every day fare…
The only desi delicacy I can think of off the top of my head would be badam ki jaaliyan from Hyderabad. Making them is a true art form! They are the symbol of weddings and celebrations and that’s really the only time I’ve ever had them, especially here in America..it’s a real treat when we come across them and there literally have been fights in my family over who gets the last one ![]()
Re: Desi delicacy
I recently attended a Hyderbadi wedding where they had badam ki jaliyan! I thought of you.
They were so pretty…each table had a gorgeous tray with them laid out in a flower pattern and a small card explaining the history behind them! Suchhhh a beautiful touch!

Re: Desi delicacy
These are badam ki jaaliyan. The are a very delicate, cookie type mithai made out of ground almonds, sugar, ilaichi powder, milk & silver vrak. They are always cut into intricate shapes and designs. During celebrations, especially weddings, huge trays and thaals are made with these in different designs (and sometimes colored!) and passed around or given as favors to guests in place of laddoo. They are a hallmark of Hydrabadi culture. They are very labor intensive to make though, and it’s hard to find people here in the US that make them correctly. There is a vendor in Chicago that makes them and has a proper FB page/website. My family has started ordering from there when we have an occasion in the family like a mangni/shaadi.

Re: Desi delicacy
More commonly called as badam katli in Hyd now a days. The jaali design is only made for weddings and the regular barfi shape for more day-to-day occassions. Its yumm and heavenly…got to find someone who is coming from Hyd now or ask my dad to ship me some ![]()
