desi businesses and riding on coat tails

so..one of my worst dining experiences was at bundu khan, the place was horrible, food tasteless and too greasy, service aweful. just the most pathetic dining experience I have had at a desi place. Bundu khan was finally shut down by health dept, and opened again, shut down again and then closed permanently.

On the other hand barBQ tonight was pretty good, same for sabri, although I should not have stopped at PIDC paan house after BBQ tonight, mazza naheen aya, they did not have good paan.

Okay..so this is all chicago. These businesses are using the names of well known Pakistani businesses. I have had no proof that these people infact have any link with the businesses shose names they are using.

now supposedly kababish on devon is owned by the brother of the geezer who started the joint in UK, but the service and taste is not the same.

…so.. in your cities, do you have similar sightings? restaurants and cafes that are named after some business in Pakistan but thats just a marketing ploy and no real relationship exists?

one day I hafta link if with one of the lads in Pak, and have them to go the bundu khan and sabri retsuarnats and ask their owners if they know about this.

Re: desi businesses and riding on coat tails

:naraz:
bundu khan of karachi rox :dhimpak:

:gadha:

Re: desi businesses and riding on coat tails

yeah i've seen it with jewellery shops in JH and i know that they have no relation to the originals. but legally speaking, unless the original business have trademarked their names, there's nothing to prevent the imitations from using the same, isnt' it?

Re: desi businesses and riding on coat tails

yes, shee whizz even in my lil African town we have a Kebabish. Then there's a flurry of Cafe Medinas and Cafe Meccas.

Re: desi businesses and riding on coat tails

yeah but I am talking about the bundu khan of chicago..which does not exist anymore for good reason.

we also have ghaseeta khan, i believe there was a cafe student for a lil while too.

Re: desi businesses and riding on coat tails

wow, u have restaurants in africa? do they make hippo nihari?

Re: desi businesses and riding on coat tails

We have Salt 'N Pepper here in Mississauga....and I don't believe that there is any connection with the one in Karachi.

Re: desi businesses and riding on coat tails

We have..ok HAD...most of the above mentioned names here..For example Sabri Nihari opened...saying it was affiliated with the mighty Chicago one...Rum0r has it gor closed becuz of some Feds or probably INS...
The other BBQ Tonite is still here,Bundu Khan was here or maybe still is.. No way does it seem anywhere close to the Pakistani one(which btw I was amazed to see done all in a modern and brushed steel decor..the DHA one anyway),and we have had Kababish,...The funny thing is there is this place, nice and clean all these names including some I dont know has tried this place...the very same restaraunt...but again after couple of months it usually has a new name...(I personally think that place is Jinxed or something...They need some peer faqeer do his thing right there...:D)..Thats all here in Dallas Texhaaas
We do have one franchise that claims to be affiliated to the originals, I dont quite remember the name but some jewelery outlet. And Yes we also have the (claimed by themselves) The only FM radio station...none other then the Glamorous name from the Movie SAlaam Nameste..(and they have even gone the extra mile with posting the pictureof the coffee mug with Preity Zintaa or is it the other way around!!(from the movie)..how original:D ..but it is good...they have Pakistani stuff on it...so no complaints coming from here...Something is better then nothing Right!!!:)..Familiar names can be a strong motivation for the people

Re: desi businesses and riding on coat tails

we have peper and salt here, the quality of that place has gone down, and I had massive food poisoning just last month courtesy of their chicken qorma.

Re: desi businesses and riding on coat tails

Amber, hey I have no issues with desi joints, although lately I have started exploring some of the more unique ones that want to have their own image. lil hole in the wall places like naan on devon, or places like bhabhis kicthen (btw u have to try this place if you visit chicago)

I just think that its a little dodgy to use names of other businesses. I mean whats next I open a kurta corner or whatever junade kamsheds place is called or TJs, btw is Tjs still in business?

Re: desi businesses and riding on coat tails

I think that most desi's get inspired by the names back home...and start using the name..Eventhough it would really help for the copycat people to try to get in touch with the real ones back home and try offering some incentives...in a try to make it more authentic.
And for Junaid Janshed brand, I had hear that it originated somewhere from Houston(thats where his MIL lives I think)..Then again I maybe wrong(110% is I am :D)....and yes teejays r still there...eventhough I just remember that it has lost the following, it seemed pretty run down in Liberty Market as I recall..Amir Adnan has opened some real franchises here in the USA, to the extent that people in Pakistan also call him AMEEEER...Its supposedly considered HIP...for Pakis to say it...Mummy daddies...:D

Re: desi businesses and riding on coat tails

Is it called Bhabi's Kitchen....sure would love to try it...But still cannot get over Frontier Chicken from Sabri Nihari some 6 years ago....Funny thing is I had never had Nihari(being a Pakistani from pakistan)...till my mian ji took me to Sabri Nihari:D

Re: desi businesses and riding on coat tails

but u know that the original restaurants in Pakistan, they have an ability to sue these guys here.

I mean, if I was a lawyer I would be all over it, talk to teh restaurants in Pak, tell em we start a law suit and they dont have to do jack but get a percentage of settlement, and then have these locals get sued for trademark infringment.

Re: desi businesses and riding on coat tails

yep ignore my typos, my posts are full of them.

Re: desi businesses and riding on coat tails
