How many of you have worn desi clothes to work?
Why type of work do you do?
What type of clothing did you wear?
What made you decide to wear desi clothes to work?
Why would you not?
Re: Desi Attire at Work
I use to wear desi clothes when i worked for a travel agents once on a voluntary basis but that was because it was owned by Asians and all staff were asians, so it was more for respect reasons.
However, since then i have never wore desi clothes to work as the type of desi clothes i wear are way too funky for work and will not look professional for the role i work in.
I think there is nothing wrong in wearing desi clothes to work, but it would depend on d type of designs/clothes u wear and where/who u work for.
Good topic btw,,,
Re: Desi Attire at Work
In my current role I have worn desi clothes to work...at first i used to just wear them on Fridays, but then since I went to umraah and began wearing hijaab, I totally altered my general dress, so used to wear them to work more.
What did I wear? Trouser suits in sobre colours mostly. Nothing spangly etc. Stayed away from cotton and linen as they would get crumpled too much.
The general dress code here is Business dress, so had to make sure it was smart all the time - hence the dark colours.
What job do I do? I work in International HR for a Multi National company. So lots of meetings etc
In my previous role in Retail management, I only wore desi clothes once - but felt that as I wasn't in a suit I wasn't taken seriously enough by staff and customers alike.
Re: Desi Attire at Work
well, i definatly wear scarf at work - with knee lengnth kameez and black trousers.i wanto stay as modest as possible.boss doesnt mind - she respects my desi style and happy with what i wear as long as its smart & with companys colours.
Re: Desi Attire at Work
I wear it on n off. Used to wear it a lot more than now.
Senior consultant
Shalwar / pants, Qameez and dupatta. Used to wear dull colors like black, brown and white. Now, I wear any color.
Hmm desi was more natural then western, I decided to go more western some years ago, when I understood what kind of signal my professional cloths send to management.
The whole package should be in sync, imo. If you believe ppl around you are ready for a change, go for it. If you believe you'll have to fight harder to prove yourself, be sure that you want to invest time in that battle.
Re: Desi Attire at Work
a couple of times i had to go straight to a desi/family thing after work...so i woudl wear a short kameez (with karhai on it)...with black dress pants...sometimes i would wear a belt with the kameez....
i would leave the duppata in the car....hehe
but now i wear a scarf...and if i had to wear the desi clothes again, i would use the dupatta as my scarf...

Re: Desi Attire at Work
I used to work at the international office of my university and there everything went. Actually we were encouraged to wear traditional clothes. It was fun but I don't think you can get by that anywhere.
Since I have been working as an Engineer, I have worn on an occasion or two malmal ka kurta and my jeans to work. I know desis at my work who wear kurtas all the time to work. I just one and its hardly ever that hot here.
My wife who is also an Engineer wears her desi long qameez to work almost everyday. But she works with hippies, who think weird/different is cool. But engineers by in large get away with a LOT more than any other profession, as far as dress code is concerned.
People should wear what they feel comfortable in and what is required for the job. For example, you can't wear shalwar qameez if you are a car mechanic, or any sort of machinery operator where lose clothing might be hazardous. Like a person who has to stay standing for most of his work day, shouldn't wear khussay.

Re: Desi Attire at Work
I dont know, Myself, I wouldnt feel comfortable wearing that in a proffesional environment except of few of the classic looking pieces sans the heavy chamkily embroideries and stuff:)...
I know of one girl that worked in a corporate environment. I was amazed to see that she was always dressed to the par in Chamak Challo with the Jhumke and kamar tak baal open. She walking across the room with all that lash pash stuff...Parandeh ke alawa everything was there with the small (wat r they called bells..I dont know lekin they make the tinkle noise when she walked)...She did land the boss pretty soon (who btw was desi):D

Re: Desi Attire at Work
No, never. I only wear desi clothes to desi parties. I wouldn't wear them to work because it would be so random! Why should I? That's like me wearing a kimono to work.
Re: Desi Attire at Work

Re: Desi Attire at Work
i’ve worn trouser kameez to work at my last job. at the time i ran a small helpdesk and we were in the tech section, and dress code was lax. never wore them for client meetings though.
i wouldn’t wear desi clothes to my current job as i feel it’s not appropriate for the corporate atmosphere on wall street. i am one of two desis onsite, and my mgmt comes from towns in america i’ve never heard of… someone told me as an aside that they’re not exactly used to desis
so i stick to business attire now as i feel more comfy in it.
