Dermatologist Visit Before Wedding

I went to the dermatologist yesterday for mu skin conditions. I am getting married in July IA. I have mild acne, some scarring and open pores. She prescribed Accutane 20 mg/day for two months. Now from what I have researched

  • You need higher dosage for it to be actually effective.
  • 2 months wont give me significant changes for the associated risk
  • Is it worth it?

She also prescribed Macrobac, anyone have any experience of this. I am little worried about the joint pain since I tend to spend 1-2 hours on the treadmill daily and am overweight.

Re: Dermatologist Visit Before Wedding

Please do not take Roaccutane esp when you are about to get married. You cannot conceive once you are on it as it causes major birht defects. And the effects of the pill stay in your body around 4-5 months even after you have discountinued using it.

The doctor should have warned you about all of this before prescribing this to you

Re: Dermatologist Visit Before Wedding

Do not take accurane if you are not on birth control. And accutane is not meant to be used for mild acne at all. Honestly, I would go to a different dermatologist as this one is very irresponsible (if you get pregnant while on accutane there is a 98% chance th child will have defects) and the medicine he prescribed is for more severe acne.

No idea about the other medicine, sorry.

Re: Dermatologist Visit Before Wedding

I have done a lot of research on Accutane because my sister was put on it. My sister had sever acne due to hormonal issues. Here, where I live Accutane is said to be one of the last resort if all other medication and treatments fail to cure acne.
Because accutane is such a severe medication, here dermatologists send accutane patients to a "accutane specialist" that specialist confirms if the patient can be put on it and explains all of the effects and side effects of it to the patient. While on it my sister had to go for a blood test every two week, she had to stop taking it during Ramadan and while on vacation (because we were travelling to it was hot and the sun was out there all the time). That being said my sister was NOT allowed to:
- go out in the sun without sunglasses and those big round hats
- get her face threaded
- take a certain vitamin pill and had to make sure that vitamin is not in any of other foods

Side effects:
- her scalp got extremely itchy
- her nose bleeded occasionally
- ears got very dry as well

As the other people said her doctor had warned her that while on the pill she could not get pregnant for atleast a year
Another friend of mine was on the same medication and she also had an extremely severe case of acne, she was in her mid twenties and her doctor told her at her age acne isn't good so she too needs to be on this medication. She also faced all of the above side effects + swollen lips.

However, all of this being said the results for both my sister and friend were amazing. Most of their acne is gone and their skin cleared up so much it was unbelievable to see them like that. Accutane does work. But its a very harsh medication due to all of the side effects.
