It's true. The problem is ignored in families until it's too late and the sufferer commits or attempts suicide.
But even in the West, I doubt employers would put up with depression unless you had a clear diagnosis from a psychiatrist. There can be mild forms of depression which escape diagnosis and the symptoms of which can be crippling.
