Depression

Do you still think there is a stigma attached to being medically recognised as a ‘depressive’?Personally speaking,i think in the Asian community there is still a stigma attached and people are not as willing to seek medical attention than say their white counterparts.

If you found out a loved one had depression, how would you react and would you treat them any differently? If you were an employer, would you treat your employee and differently to a non-depressive?

I think some people do not understand how serious an issue depression can be and how devastating it can be for the sufferer and those around him or her1

Re: Depression

Re: Depression

I agree with you...With the desi mentality its like u know seen as the sufferer's fault ...Its just mostly jahaliyat on the desi's parts. Its mostly treated as ...hey its all in your head!!..I'll reply in detail later..

Re: Depression

It's true. The problem is ignored in families until it's too late and the sufferer commits or attempts suicide.

But even in the West, I doubt employers would put up with depression unless you had a clear diagnosis from a psychiatrist. There can be mild forms of depression which escape diagnosis and the symptoms of which can be crippling.

Re: Depression

I think its a big problem, not just in the desi community, in terms of the stigma attached and also in the fact that several people dont get tested for it when they really should.

One of my friends, her father suffers from severe depression. If the community doesnt understand, it isnt the job of the person suffering to make them understand either. What they need is to have supportive family and friends around them to help them through. It's not something that always goes away with a few words of advice, which is why one should see a professional about it.

Yes, I do think medical conditions should be considered in terms of how you deal with a person. It's like if you find out your friend is afraid of animals. You dont take them to the zoo. You take them to other places.

But it doesnt mean that you cater to their every whim. There has to be a fine line, so that you yourself are not pulled into the same feelings.

I dont know what the protocal is in terms of work. I dont know if people discuss this information with their employer or not.

Re: Depression

Everyone gets depressed sometimes about something. The important issue is how to deal with it and most people have the ability to cope with these isolated episodes. Chronic depression is a serious illness and should be dealt accordingly with some serious attention.
