This is really sad. There is a difference of opinion. Some scholars say that a divorce given three times in one sitting only counts as one divorce, and that a divorce given in anger may not be valid either. Too many men abuse this right.
Adding the right of khula to a contract is common among muslims from other cultures (than south asian). When we were planning our nikkah, a desi imam wouldn't marry us because he thought that my contract was too detailed, and said it was haraam for me to ask for the right of divorce. So we got married in a larger mosque that was mostly Arab, and the sheikh said it should be in my contract, and that he wouldn't marry a couple unless they added it, because it's for the protection of the girl.
