Jawan Ji, I would agree with you, as I hold a similar view. BUT why are so many Muslims falling for this trap called democracy?
Including every single Pakistani politician. Needless to say how Benazir praises democracy on TV......the list is endless.....

Did the Prophet not say something to the effect of, "my people will never agree upon something wrong". Is that not support for democracy? How are we defining democracy here?
If not democracy, what type of government is compatible with Islam? Are there any strict guidelines to follow - is there such a thing as an Islamic state?
Achtung
Hmmmmm yes there is an islamic state but ONLY in papers and in maps thats all...they say islamic "republic" of pakistan when islam and republic dont mix and they have been making people stupid for last 52 years...Islam is DEEN a way of life...it has everything in it...we just gota dig into it...and friendly enemies of muslims make islam look soo hard and tough that we dont wana embrace it... smell of the $ is more these days...they put curtain on the eyes of our leaders with 100$ bills and they cant see, cant think, cant make right decision for thire people, and to them more is never enough!!!

baleya, Jawan, and Acthung Sahibaan!
Democracy, is form of government in which people have and exercise power.
Hun, where is this found. Certainly not in any Muslim country. But most surely no in USA, as so wrongly believed by most of us.
How best is it described in Qura~n:
"They conduct their affairs by mutual consultation." (Sura Shura:38)
Preaching democracy is one thing and practising it another. Holding elections does not mean that a functional democracy is in place. To say the least, the two political parties in the US have become so mixed in with the government that they have convinced voters that they are government. In fact, it is a two-party dictatorship in which it is hard to distinguish where one begins and the other leaves off.
Islam dictates that mutual consultation by everyone is pre-request.
Salamo-Alaikum
Hmm I just want to be clear on one point.
Democracy is not Shura.
Any scholar who understands even little bit of Shariah can tell you that......
Democracy is also more than just holding elections....democracy is where man is the legislator...i.e. man makes all the rules on how to live, in a society, how the social system should be, how the political system should be, how the economic system should be, etc etc....so essentially, man makes "any and all" rules.
That very essence is against Islam. As Allah swt tells us "And whosoever does not rule by what Allah has revealed, such are the Kafirun (i.e. disbelievers)" Al-Maidah: 44
There are many more ayahs that tell us to rule by what Allah swt has revealed...
But then the question arises, how can we call these states "islamic states" when they are not ruling by Islam?
Why are muslims falling for such a lie? And why are not the 'schcolars' telling the Ummah? And why are these scholars all over the muslim world legitimizing the illegal and corrupt governments?

Hmmmmmm well said bleya and well said bakhtyar...Man does not know how man's mentality works, but the god the creator of the man knows what is man and how it is run, and what is good and what is bad for man he knows that becuase he created the damn thinggg...

Mostansar Sahib!
Democracy is Greek. demo (people) + krateein (to rule) It is a form of governance. It may not necessarily, be mundane law. Harry Emerson Fosdrick, a great democrate of our time once said:
"Democracy is based upon the conviction that there are extraordinary possibilities in ordinary people."
People often get irritated, when democracy is compared with shura. Shura (mutual consultation) is nothing more than consulting one n other, in matters pertaining to expert advices from expert consultants. It is organised in almost the same manners as those of democracy. There are precedents from the time of Prophet Mohammad, swaw. As a matter of fact democracy is more rigid and fundamental in nature as compared to shura. As the Islamic Law does not form a defined mechanism for shura, and this is one of its merits and a safeguard for the future because the realization differs according to the time and place. It leaves it to the community.
Whereas democracy as practiced now a days is very fundamental, and if one deviates from its principals, which were laid down thousands of years ago, is immediatly labled as 'otherwise'.
I have no hasitation in admitting that one must follow, what Allah has ordained. Reason- He manufactured us, He knows best- what we are and what we will do- Mundane laws as it is evident, requires, amendments every now n then. So why not follow, what is comprehsive and may become a salvation not only here, but in the hereafter too.
I mean what better, can one find, than as Allah says in Qura~n
"O' you who believe, stand out firmly for justice, as witness to Allah even as against yourselves, or your parents, or your kin." (Al-Nisa 135)
Yes I agree with you that such governments or shuras are no where in this world now a days.
