Demise

Around what year and month did gs see its biggest drop in user engagement.
Could it be because as the general population gets married and have babies they have less time to traverse through thousands of posts everyday.
Could it be that as we age we lose the ability to be able to sit through and read thousands of posts everyday
Could it be that social media giants like Uber and Lyft have taken it upon themselves to provide peoples' need for social media engagement
Would GS retain its user engagement more if it wasn't so darned difficult to browse and bug ridden

Summer’ish of 2015 is what I remember. The population had declined some but it could still be called a bustling place even then. If you scroll down on the homepage, I believe it even lists 2015 as the last time that GS had the most members. And we did used to have members that were married with children who were very active on the forum.

What do you think sets us apart from those who have left? What keeps us tethered to this place?

Perhaps a combination of all of the above and then some. BBS powered general purpose portals are a dying breed now, only ones still pulling in decent traffic are those focused on specific interests like automotive enthusiasts, sports, immigration/law topics etc.

Back in the day, BBS enabled people around the globe to converge with a sense of belonging to a community from the comforts of their homes 24/7 at their own convenience - it was something unique, groundbreaking and uncharted waters. But with the breakneck pace of technological evolution, the trends and platforms changed quickly, people’s habits & preferences changed, now our stamina to carry on a conversation online has shrunk down to a few shorthand keystrokes on Whatsapp or even worse, a combination of all sorts of emojis to convey what we’re trying to say.

BBS boards have pretty much become a relic of past, carrying an almost nostalgic feel to it.

@Raamis has pretty much summed it up. I just want to add that people got bored and grew out of their addiction and moved on. Also some went on sabbatical thanks to moderators and admins :roman:

LOL :biggthumb:, yah. At the height of GS’ popularity, admin team took their job way too seriously, starting to act like they’re sitting on a corporate board of directors:rotfl:, acting all tiff, playing God and handing out bans & favors left & right. The pitch battles that were fought regularly among various groups here was quite some masala stuff to enjoy from the sidelines.

Personally I do believe a robust mobile app will do wonders to reel people back in.
