I’ve been planning on getting this thread running so I would have a better idea about getting myself either a new computer tower or a new laptop…
Before you start replying to this, know this that I am a learner, and I wish to start building my game studio.
I’ve been studying C++, more like reviewing C++ since I already know C# and its feels like I am reviewing it. On with that I’ve been studying maths and Directx.
So far, I have settled down myself with Softimage XSI, Zbrush. Paint tools are yet to be decided. Either I’ll start using Painter11 or stick to Photoshop CS4.
I have a Cintiq 15x which I’ll be upgrading to 21wx. http://store1.corel.com/corel/product/index.jsp?pid=prod3430070&cid=catalog50008&skuId=PK_PTR11CIN21 http://www.wacom.com/cintiq/cintiq-21ux.php?gclid=CL2MwrSO0aICFcRM5QodJiijxQ
Its better to buy it with a Painter 11 bundle so I wont have to worry about getting myself a legit paint tool or texture tool for that matter.
Now for the work station: I have been looking for the right one for about 6 months now and I have narrowed down my choices to 3 or maybe 4.
PC: Dell Precision T3500 Tower workstation.
I am still trying to play with its build engine but Dell have some errors on their site. :konfused:
Besides if I buy this one its going to be my first time using Xeon for 3d modeling and animation. <.<
Laptop: Dell Precision M4500 Mobile workstation.
Intel Core i7-620M Dual Core 2.66GHz 4MB
comes with 32/64 genuine Win7 Ultimate. (professional prefered)
4GB DDR3, 1333MHz SDRAM 2 DIMMS
500GB HD (I dont really care because I am going to buy the external 1TB or 1.5TB)
Nvidia Quadro FX 880M Gfx or FX 1800 Gfx with 1GB memory (I honestly dontk now why the heck they cant get past 1GB in every video card :naraz:)
Laptop: Dell Precision M6500 Mobile Workstation.
Same specs as above.
In edition to the graphics card which is Quadro FX 2800M gfx.
Anyways, so I was wondering if someone can help me figure out whats good for starters.
hmmm .. Good keep it up … Instead of writing a game engine I suggest you to go with UDK .. unreal development kit … it will save you alot of time … but do develop a game engine for your experince
I was a web programer / programmer .. Now im totally in Animation field .. I tested almost all 3d apps … using 3ds max for 6years .. but now on maya because Max works only on windows
I was in your situation before … I have powerful computers in office .. but i want something powerful in home as well .. Four years ago i bought Dell Dimension PC with 24"ultrasharp dual core .. one i can afford at that time …
then after two year i feel like i need a laptop for comfort .. to lay on bed and work .. but found too weak to do actually work
Now six months ago .. i was looking to something really powerful .. HP z800 with dual Xeon / Quadro Fx 5600 or 5800 ..with lots of ram .. but when i compare prices and spec with Mac pro … i find mac pro more suitable .. and plan to install windows & linux on mac … but OS X change my mind .. and i switched my favourite max to Maya .. but im happy
So moral of story … If you want something powerful to work with 3D , rendering / smiulations … go with Workstation ..
and i think you need bigger screen as well .. if you buy a laptop with 17" screen its not portable any more .. i had dell percision M laptop 17" inch before from campany .. it was really hard to move it around
well, yes, but it doesnt cover much space on your table, you it is hard indeed, but you can always move it around and set it up.
if I go for a tower I will have to look for their cooler also..
UDK is wht i intend to use until i am comfy with dx programming.
so you are saying tht I should buy the 21wx…have you seen the size of it? Its huge..I was really planning on buying it but than I was like “maybe its too big for my work space.”
I wouldnt use UDK professionally even if it is in high demand. Reason being…you pay $99.00s for license fees plus 25% revenue you make from games if it exceeds 5k.
So they will really snatch a big part of your revenue if you decide to put your hard work at UDK…
Its better to create your own game engine if you wish to start your own company.
What workstation are you talking about sir…Tower? Or mobile work station.
