Yeah the buses ( procured and maintained by DTC) are of international standard and they have A/C , toilets and luxurious seats.

they used to have alot of Imran Khan and Wasim Akram pictures hanging on their shops too ;)

Why you are so ecstatic about it ? Wasim and Waqar have big fan clubs in India too. So do Steve Waugh and Brian Lara. And you could find their pics as well on shops!
Yeah sure , pakistani players are a bit more popular than other foreign players. As they are closer to India than Australia, South Africa or West-Indies. In the same way , on karachi streets you can find posters of SRK , Hrithik and Aishwarya !

I noticed this first-hand when Pakistan won the cricket world cup in 1992 - I was genuinely happy. But this confused me too, because I thought it was wrong (I was only an adolescent then). Later on, I realized that beneath their mutual hostility, Indians and Pakistanis really accept each other quite easily, once the ice is broken. After all, we are closer in culture to each other than to people of other countries.

As a very broad generalisation, I normally find that Indians and Pakistanis get along very well anywhere outside the sub-continent.
On the subcontinent, the two peoples are a thermonuclear war waiting to happen,

In that case the Dehli/lahore bus is definitely a step in the right direction.

I do agree, m_S.
But, I feel that even on the subcontinent, ordinary Pakistanis and Indians are friendly to each other - if in personal contact. For example, people from one of the two countries, when visiting the other country, find the people there to be generally nice (as Spock said).
So, what goes wrong otherwise? In our everyday lives in the subcontinent, why do we resent people of the other country?
I feel this above question would be more appropriate in a separate topic, and so I will start it now.
SO? Any news?
i read in the Jang today that the serivce is expected to start on the 11th of july..
:k:

i hope it will become cananda/us border. only way to see a country
is to visit not read newspapers.
The bus service started today. :)
There will be one bus each in the two directions, on Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday.
The fare from the Indian side is INR 800, and the fare from the Pakistani side is PNR 950. The journey takes 12 hours.
There is a heavy demand for the service, and the tickets are being booked in advance. :)
Celebrations Greet India, Pakistan Peace Buses
Looks like it was pretty successful. Makes a nice change to see a positive step instead of the usual bitching - which is ok online but at governmental level can be tiresome ![]()
Why 12 hours? It should take less than 45 minutes by taking a bus from Attari to Lahore. Basically the passengers are packed into the bus from New Delhi for 12 hours without the opportunity of getting out of the bus and mixing with people. Same goes the other way from Lahore to New Dehli. Buses go from Amritsar to Attari every 5 minutes. Buses from Lahore to Wagha go every 10 minutes. People can take taxies also.
In my view Bus service is a way of limiting the contact and at the same time winning some browny point by politicians. Give people visitor visas freely and let them visit each other's country and see for themselves. It should cost less than 200 rs/- per person to visit the other side and come back same day.
Channji, I am waiting for the day when I can ride my Khoti from Lahore to Amritsar, leave her there, and come back on an Indian Khoti.
now why would you want to trade khotis..there are not like arab horses, that you may end up with a better breed, instead.
On a serious note, I tend to agree that the border should be opened, and visa restrictions should be abolished on trade visits. It will immensely benefit the average person, and help to reduce poverty..
peopel should be allowed to mix and pakistanis should go and find out
talk to indian muslims to see what is happening and see how they live
not just read from newspapers.
I watching BBC news and they were covering this Delhi Lahore Bus story. I took me back to the era when subcontinent wasn't divided yet,(no I'm not that old) and I wished i had lived to see that era. How would it have felt, how would the people be, etc. etc. :)
i'd like to visit india someday too..i just hope that no one tries to cause trouble..there are plenty of lunatics in pakistan and india
