Dekha na tha kabhi hum ne yeh samaa - A Tribute to Pakistani Pop Music Industry

With the advent of TV in Pakistan in 1964, Pakistani Music (which was then restricted to folk, classical & semi classical style of singing) saw a new trend. The first voice that set the new trends in Pakistani Music Industry was of a dubla patla Aalamgir (with strong voice) and the song was ‘Dekha na tha kabhi hum ne yeh samaa’.

Aalamgir came with many TV hits and also recorded some songs for Pakistani Film Industry. The most famous being:

Following the foot steps of Aalamgir, many new singers came into Pop music industry of Pakistan and got appreciation not only in Pakistan but also across the border. This trend still prevails with the introduction of new talented singers.

Lets post songs of your favourite Pakistan pop singers to give a tribute to our stars.

Aww man I love Alamgir! Used to hum his tunes when I was little :) Still do!! It was great to see him sing again w/ a Canadian chick recently and make a video to raise funds for his healthcare bills :-) May Allah keep him healthy. Ameen

Yes, we all grow listening to his melodious voice. Allah unhe Seht e aajla ata farmae.

Whats ur favourite song by Alamgeer?

Re: Dekha na tha kabhi hum ne yeh samaa - A Tribute to Pakistani Pop Music Industry

^ I usually hum "shaam se pehle aana ; dhoop saari dhaal rahi ho, phool saare khil gaaye hon; mausam saare lai aana" :-) so I'll put that at the top my fav. list and then of course 'yeh shaam aur tera naam dono kitne milte julte hain" ; "mein ne tumhari ghaghar se kabhi paani piya tha" ; "dekha na tha kabhi hum ne yeh sama"

Re: Dekha na tha kabhi hum ne yeh samaa - A Tribute to Pakistani Pop Music Industry

Wow what a coincidence! I also like Aalamgir’s songs in that very order. Even there was a time, when I used to play ‘Sham se pehlay aanaa’ while driving back home from office in evenings. I love the instrument (I think its mouth organ) played in this song.

Come on guys! Post your favourite songs.

Here is one of the earliest pop song of Pakistan, originally sung by Ahmed Rushdie for Movie Armaan in 1950s and then remixed by Alamgir in 1980’s.

Re: Dekha na tha kabhi hum ne yeh samaa - A Tribute to Pakistani Pop Music Industry

After Alamgir, it was Muhammad Ali Shehki who became famous for his pop singing.

Pakistan’s first fusion song (Pop + Folk) - Tere Ishq main jo bhi doob gaya was also sung by Shehki alongwith Alan Faqeer. The song was beautifully directed by none other than talented Sahira Kazmi

Shehki also sung some patriotic songs, which are still popular.

Re: Dekha na tha kabhi hum ne yeh samaa - A Tribute to Pakistani Pop Music Industry

Ahmed Rushdie is often overlooked. In my eyes he was Pakistan’s first pop singer

Then came Aalimgir, M.Ali Sheki, and Nazia-Zohaib.

If we are talking about bands, Jupiters was the first band that really got a break but Vital Signs was the first one to take pop industry by storm. VS made pop reach every household and even older people who were allergic to POP songs used to listen VS songs.

Most of us know about Nazia-Zohailb, Aalimgir, Shehki and other groups. Here is one song from Jupiters

Thank you D6C for your nice contribution.

No doubt, many of our stars have been under rated due to our peculiar attitude that one has to be recognised by rest of the world to get our attention.

Ahmed Rushdie is really a versatile singer who sings all type of songs including some that can be covered under pop category. Here is another song by him that I like most.

We have a lot of singers and bands who sung amazing songs which are still popular today.

Hassan Jehangir is another pop singer, who although did not work much, but ‘Hawa hawa’ is still alive in our memories.

Re: Dekha na tha kabhi hum ne yeh samaa - A Tribute to Pakistani Pop Music Industry

Hawa Hawa was such a hit in India that I read news about all crazy stuff happening there like

"dulhan nai rukhsati sai inkaar kerdeay jub tak hawa hawa song play nahi keya jayee ga"

and no I m not kidding, it was in Jang and other credible news papers back then.

Re: Dekha na tha kabhi hum ne yeh samaa - A Tribute to Pakistani Pop Music Industry

I love the pop music of Pakistan produced in 80s and 90s, the list of songs I like is so long so let me stick myself to Alamgir only in this post. My most favourite song by this legenday Pop Icon of Pakistan is ‘mujhey tum yaad aatay ho’

Then there is another song sung by Alamgir that I only heard a few times on FM 101 way back in late 90s, its lyrics were: ‘kia wasf uss shayer mein tha, kia baat uss pagal mein thee’ it was a wonderful song, i think it was written by Ahmad Faraz and unfortunately I can’t find it anywhere on internet, has anyone heard this song ? It was one of the best songs by Alamgir IMHO.

^:rotfl:

Hassan Jehangir’s ‘Shadi Na karna’ was very well taken by masses except for the real msg of the song.

Here is the parody of this song:

Thanks for participating. That ghazal is really amazing, I have never heard that, but I read it and its amazing. I also like Alamgir’s romantic song ’ Dekhte hi dekhte pyar hua’ but could not find it online.

Re: Dekha na tha kabhi hum ne yeh samaa - A Tribute to Pakistani Pop Music Industry

ah what a beauty; such a soothing number - thanks for posting

Re: Dekha na tha kabhi hum ne yeh samaa - A Tribute to Pakistani Pop Music Industry

Tehseen Javed. Another pop star, who mostly sung group songs (mainly milli naghme)

His major hit came in early 90’s with the song that revived Pakistan film Industry. The song was ‘Dil hogaya hai tere deevana’ from Javed Shaikh’s Mushkil. His song ’ Door kahin thi wo saamne aai’ for Syed Noor’s ‘Devaane tere pyar ke’ also became a hit.

Thanks. Do share your memories.

Re: Dekha na tha kabhi hum ne yeh samaa - A Tribute to Pakistani Pop Music Industry

I will.

Daikha na tha was probably the first song i really listened to and liked.

First heard the instrumental version on a PIA flight.

Ko ko korina was also a favourite. Reminds of when i use to sing it in class and got a friend in trouble for it.

Re: Dekha na tha kabhi hum ne yeh samaa - A Tribute to Pakistani Pop Music Industry

:k:… Do share that Koko Korina trouble story with us.

Re: Dekha na tha kabhi hum ne yeh samaa - A Tribute to Pakistani Pop Music Industry

Well we used to sit together. During chemistry, we had a very old teacher probably in his 70’s. So during lesson i would look at my book and just sing “ko ko korina” under my breath. my friend was the only one who could hear this. This would send him into bouts of giggles. The teacher asked him why he was laughing?

To this he replied , " Sir yeh ghana gha rahey hain". The teacher replied " In ko ghaney dain, aap karey ho jain".

To this day that one incident makes me happy!!
