Degree initials after name?

When is it proper to use your degree level initials after your name in a professional manner? Is it after graduate school or post graduate school like a Ph.D? If you do write it after graduate school is it sign of show off?

Re: Degree initials after name?

I think it defers from country to country.

Say like once you complete BSC honors degree ,you can use B.Sc and once you complete Masters degree, use M.SC. Using "Dr." when you have a Ph.D. I think you can use name initials straight after completing your specific qualification.

Re: Degree initials after name?

Post-graduate.

No cares about the other stuff =(

Re: Degree initials after name?

There are guidelines from the institutes usually. Like you have to fulfill certain requirements before you can writ them ...

Re: Degree initials after name?

As Lily said it varies from country to country. Over here in Austria for example the prefix "Mag." which stands for Magister (equivalent to a Masters Degree) becomes part of your legal name once you get your degree.

So after completing his Masters degree "Joel Khan" would become "Mag. Joel Khan", ie that's the name that would be put into your passport.

Dr Joel Khan or Professor Joel Khan

Re: Degree initials after name?

This.

Do it after post graduation only. It only sounds impressive than because once you include it in your signature for outgoing emails, it will reflect your credentials with the role you are working with. It will not vary from country to country as multinationals usually follow this rule.

Re: Degree initials after name?

Ok. So what is post graduate for you? Is it Masters? Since thats what wikipedia says it means in the US. I dont know but for some reason I thought post graduate was a Ph.D

Re: Degree initials after name?

Working on Professor as I might start teaching undergrad at my uni soon. Dr. is no where in sight.

Re: Degree initials after name?

I think any initials you have earned (B.S., M.S., Ph.D., M.D., D.V.M, etc.) can be used but they should only be used when relevant. So, if I was Dr. Garam Masala, I should only use that title or the corresponding letters that come with it in correspondence with co-workers, colleagues, and clients and not anywhere else.

However, if it is common to have a bachelors degree in your field, I wouldn't bother mentioning it.

Re: Degree initials after name?

Teaching uni students? Will you be teaching IT? Have you ever taught before? Teaching uni students is fine since most of them are adults but college and school kids no way!
