lets have some definitions…
came up during a chat with a friend…
he hasnt replied me yet with an exact answer…
so i thought it wud be interesting to know…
how do u define a muslim???
i define it by its very meaning…
someone who surrenders to the Will of Allah…
in all matters ofcourse…
and every lapse takes him away from being a real muslim…
i dont take the usual definition of ‘kalima reader’ to be really the right one…

Well, I agree with you...Since Islam is made up of five 'pillars', not believing in and doing any one of them intentionally is tantamount to breaking the very foundation of Islam which automatically chucks you out of Islam...
But we have Muslims who believe that as long as you say the Kalima, you are a Muslim...Wrong. Pillar means support. Take one pillar out and the whole structure crumbles.
Islam rests on 5 pillars. Not following those pillars is equal to disbelieving in them and disbelieving in even one pillar is Shirk and Shirk is Kufr hence, no more Muslim...
Be ready to fight off the 'Kalima Muslims' Mughal...
To me, a Muslim is someone who adheres to the 5 pillar of Islam and who practices Islam in his/her heart instead of necessarily proving to the world what a great Muslim he/she is.

What are the "5" pillars? just want to be on same page :)
Muslim is someone who submits to Allah Alone and follows the 'Straight Path'..(Sirat-e-Mustaqeem).
The "Straight Path" is defined in 6:151, 152, 153)
The 'kalima' is a later invention.. what about people who had other Prophets come to them asking them to profess Monotheism?
[4:125] And who has a better religion than he who submits himself entirely to Allah? And he is the doer of good (to others) and follows the faith of Ibrahim, the upright one, and Allah took Ibrahim as a friend.
Changez_like quote: even if he is "buddhist"? you need to qualify it further

[not being sarcastic] so if one drinks, gambles and has illicit relationships, etc, then this person claims to belive in Kalima he is a muslim, what is your opinion?

Not a particularly good muslim, but yes, a Muslim.

I agree PA. My "kalima" basically meant to say belief in Allah's unity and His final prophet. The latter I say because, the Ibrahimic faith evolved with subsequent messengers and with the final Prophet, belief in the Prophet does become a part of the core beliefs of that faith. This does not impact the beliefs of those before Islam, just as those who used to drink wine before it was banned for Muslims wouldnt be held accountable for it.
Bottom line, I do believe there is one underlying faith and Islam is the only current manifestation of it. Some manifestation of Islam that is :-).
