According to some ppl on here it can simply be a wife who wants to work or a girl who doesn’t want to live with her inlaws, obviously decisions and rights that are taken for granted in most other cultures and wouldn’t result in the women being labelled as ‘feminists’ or ‘feminazis.’
A feminist is a girl whose views may or may not contradict Islam but whose views definitely contradict our desi culture and society norms and principles.
I think a feminist is someone who fights for not only her rights, but for the rights of other women as well and tries to bring social awareness to the lack of womens rights.
In our culture though a woman who simply may want to learn to drive, or who doesn't want to conform to the conventions of our culture by cooking, cleaning and popping out babies all her life is labelled a feminist. The word feminist is used too loosely around here and seems to often be used in a derisive and insulting manner.
A feminist according to GS standards is anyone who wants things like bread, water and a cardboard box to live in without having to share it with ten other people.
In all seriousness though, a feminist IMO is someone who considers herself to be the equal of a man.

Could a girl who says no to an arranged marriage be classed as one?

Absolutely, that is exactly how I put it. The word feminist has become such a slur when all it really means is just someone who stands up for women's rights regardless of cultural or religious background.

But then my question is that is a woman really equal to a man?
Personally I don't think so.
I think women have their own set of strengths and men their own. Some overlap and some can never. Fighting for women's rights is NOT the same thing as trying to be equal to a man.
A person (male or female) who considers women inherently worthy of the same rights and freedom as men, in political and social contexts.
'Inherent worth' and 'same rights' is equality. But like someone pointed out, equality does not mean sameness. A woman may exercise her right to be the most traditional woman, if she chooses. As long as there are no other political or social systems that hinder her right to her chosen way of life, there is no problem - obviously, there is a distinction to be drawn between withholding a right/freedom and having difficulty balancing different responsibilities (say a working couple with a child on the way).
Nowadays, the debate in the West is about how the social structures subtly negatively affect womens' lives. Wearing revealing clothes comes to mind, objectification of women on tv/movies, 9-5 work schedules not accommodating women's priorities towards kids, the salary difference (in Canada women make 68cents for each dollar a man makes - this includes full time, part time workers, unemployed and differing occupations).

I dont think they're the same. I do think they're equal but different.
Every other* lalloo *loose tongue woman likes to think she's a feminist, its because of them the word has become a slur.
Its so ironic how in desi world, feminism starts and ends at woman demanding **man to provide whatever she desires, it revolves around their petty little domestic issues when really feminism is all about the world that goes beyond your domestic sphere . Originally feminism is about women going out, excelling in education, using her education to compete with men in the professional world, having an intellectual voice, being aware of their rights, being ambitious, being **successful in their field, its an independence and empowerment of an intellectual kind. In short feminists choose their own world and make their own lives, a feminist is a woman with a goal and sense of direction.
In my view and the view of the founding mothers of feminism, feminist is a woman who serves the society just like any other man, who makes the maximum out of her intellectual potential. For me, a female working doctor (or insert any profession) is a true feminist woman than a housewife who sits at home, lives on her husband's money, and thinks she's a feminist because she refuses to take his name and demands to be live away from the in laws.
Feminist woman should be identified by who she is and what she's achieved, not how big of mouth and ego she has in her own little four bedroom walls.
You guys seriously have no clue what being a feminist is all about. It's not about competing with other man, it's not about putting down men, it's not even about holding professional career. It's about earning your place in this world as a human that deserves respect and attention for who they are. It's about living comfortably and being happy with who you are. It's about knowing your rights and making a change in this world. It's about taking charge not so that we can become like men but so that your perception about women becomes more than just a housewife or babymqking machine. A woman has more to offer to this world than your little minds can think. Being a feminist is understanding another woman's pain and supporting your own kind through thick and thin. It's not about hating men at all! I love men and I love being a woman. It's about loving yourself and letting the world know that you exist by doing more than what's been handed to you. If anything you should be proud of us for changing the world and not becoming dependent on you!
