Deewan ji

What is meant by Deewan (not the poetry one), when used for title of a man?

In ruler Sindh, Hindu community is referred as Deewan (besides most common VaaRiya derived from VaRanj Wapaar, referring to there affiliation with Wapaar - trade)

Re: Deewan ji

Otaak??

I think it's a separate room out side the house where male guests used to stay.

Re: Deewan ji

I'm not referring to Deewan e Khas as present in Mughal buildings. I referring to people called Deewan

Re: Deewan ji

Why I always misunderstand your threads title

And yes my father have few Hindu friends and he call them deewan.I thought deewan was their cast.:hmmm:

Re: Deewan ji

in sub-continental judiciary system there were two types of courts...one was deevaanii and the other one was fauj-daarii...[civil and criminal courts]...so deevaan was some kinda legal position they held in the civil court to process the trials. these people were called deevaans. **

Re: Deewan ji

Re: Deewan ji

Re: Deewan ji

in India, Deevaan Ji can be anyone who is associated with courts proceedings. both Hindus and Muslims.

Re: Deewan ji

In rural part of maharashtra it is something like manager..who manage account, payments and supervise all the works of agricultural land is called as deewanji of land lord...

in same manner the person who keeps record of accounts of a business was also called as deewanji of proprietor....

i think in hindu estates it was equivalent of prime minister....
