Rumi came from a family of theologians and was himself a scholar at the age of 24. Rumi wouldn't be your cup of tea as his teachings of islam and practise of islam are based on the esoteric and not the exoteric.

"What can be done, O believers, as I don't recognize myself.
I'm neither a Christan nor Jew, Magian nor Moslem.

I'm not of the East or West, neither land nor sea;
I'm not of Nature's mine, nor the stars in Heaven.

I'm not of earth, water, air or fire;
I'm not of Heaven, nor the dust on this carpet.

I'm not of India, China, Bulgaria nor Saqsin,
I'm not of the kingdom of Iraq, nor Khorasan.

I'm not of this world, nor the next, Paradise nor Hell;
I'm not of Adam, nor Eve, Eden nor Rizwan.

My place is in the Placeless, my trace in the Traceless;
I'm neither body nor soul, as I belong to the soul of the Beloved.

I have dispensed with duality, and seen the two worlds as One;
One I seek, One I know, One I see, One I call.

He is the first, last, outward, inward,
I know none other than He, and He Who Is."

ok if this is an example of Rumi's poetry then i dont need to say anything about him....
he has said it by himself that he is not a Muslim (i.e. a follower of Islam)....

"Our Lord! forgive us our sins and anything we may have done that transgressed our duty; establish our feet firmly and help us against those that resist faith." **Quran(3:147)

Your opinion of 'what is a muslim' is not shared by esoteric sufis and the agakhani ismailis. For them Islam encompasses all revelations and Islam or muslims are not the chosen of Allah free to abuse any & all in His name.

Once Mowlana was in sema(whirling dance, prayer rituals, of the dervish) when "Azan" the call to prayer was sung.

His disciples announced "it's time to go to "Namaz", Moslem prayer.

Mowlana's reply was:"We are in prayer!"

Mowlana believed in Islam (meaning surrender), wassalam! To him, anyone who
surrenders his or her will to the will of God is a Moslem. That is clearly
reflected in the story of Moses and the Shepherd where he even alludes to Moses as a Moslem.

Mowlana was not so short sighted and narrow minded as to prefer one religion, creed, sect, denomination, fiqh or faqih over another.

He perceived religion (deen not maz'hab) as a pathway to God, not more, nor less.

As you know, in latin the term "religion" means "to link back to" or "reconnect with;" to what other than the source whence we came? None other than the Beloved/God/Self.

Inside the Ka'aba it doesn't matter which direction you point your prayer rug!

The ocean diver doesn't need snowshoes!
The love-religion has no code or doctrine.
Only God.

So the ruby has nothing engraved on it! It doesn't need markings."

Azaan → song???

Now this proves armughal’s point. Is sema (dancing) more important than Namaaz?

I'm just going to chip in from a purely non-aligned viewpoint. Poetry in the name of love is okay, in the pursuit for the love of God that’s okay too.....but to 'big' anyone up for this is NOT okay. Keep everything balanced.

Sufism is a way of the heart not of the mouth or pen. A true Sufi is no poet but for himself and is indistinguishable from you or I in all respects.

Armughal, RBB et al., is it not true that God only himself can see the hypocrites amongst us, pointing fingers or rejoicing in another’s verse is not going to necessarily help yourself or one another to find enlightenment.

I have read Persian Sufi poetry for quite some time; it is an art form nothing more and certainly nothing less.

I task my self to remember
A time more joyous than now
When all that I seek is your forgiveness
My soul in your presence does bow.
