Has anyone ever done their own decorations for their small functions, ie mayun or mehndi at home? I’ve got a specific vision of what I’d like on my small functions which are being held at home, and since its a once in a lifetime thing, I really would like to try, however I’m thinking it might be too pricey and it would be smarter to just hire someone for it. Does anyone have any money saving tips about where to get sari fabric or desi decorations for cheap? Or any at home decoration ideas? I want to go for a desi theme – with lots of pinks, oranges, and reds at the mayun and lots of greens, blues, and yellows at the mehndi.
where abouts are you based, thats the first question! Secondly yes’ decorating yourself would be wonderful. If you are in Pak let me know then i will tell you where to find bulks of cheap one color cloth and other net, chiffon whatever you like to go with it.
We did my mamoon's mayun, my cousin's mehndi, and a dholki for me at my parents' basement. Here are a few of the things we did:
1. Ammi sews, so she sewed colorful cushion covers as well as brought some from Pakistan.
2. We put down white sheets all over the ground for everyone to sit, and then colorful cushions all along the side.
3. We found old brightly colored dupattas and put them on the walls as well as streamers (some mix of yellow, orange, and magenta).
4. We twisted the streamers and then taped them down the wall, making vertical stripes throughout the basement, about a foot apart.
5. We also bought lots of Christmas lights and put them up on the walls and along the banisters.
6. Ammi collected a variety of yellow, red, and orange silk flowers and kept them to decorate walls, etc.
7. She also bought cheap glass vases (you can get them at Michaels I think), covered them in yellow netting, and filled them with water, and dropped a few floating candles in each. That looked really nice.
8. We also found an arch (at Michaels too I think), that came with Christmas lights to go over it. That came in really handy, to use as the backdrop for a stage. Very pretty.
You can do it, it just takes time, effort, and creativity. Will come out really nice, I think.
As far as fabric goes, if you live in a big city, look at the Indian sari shops--often times there are sales on various saris. Also, check out fabric stores in your area. Net tulle is usually pretty inexpensive, like a dollar a yard and it comes in many colors.
