Decorating your post-marriage home

Hey everyone,

My rukhsati will take place in a few months and I’ll be moving from Toronto to California. My husbands’ current home, which he shares with his mom, needs a woman’s touch and only God knows how I can’t WAIT to get started.
Being the eldest in my family, I was always consulted when it came to selecting wall colors, furniture, rugs…and therefore I’ve always been inclined towards decorating.
My husband is excited that I want to work on the space and make it pretty but I do think he has some reservations. I’ve assured him that changes will be gradual and that I will work within our budget.
I just wanted to know if any of you have been in a similar situations and how has the experience been? The issue here is not just that I’m tackling a big project but also that I am entering someone’s personal space. I want to make changes that he and my MIL are comfortable with.
Any ideas on how i should go about doing this?
p.s. I will be moving to the Bay Area in CA so if anyone has knowledge of stores that I should hit up, please let me know

Re: Decorating your post-marriage home

Bay area? Long beach? OMG California is gorgeous you are so lucky!!!!

My best advice is to make sure you include him and especially your MIL in the entire process. Show her that her opinion is very important to you, take her with you when you go shopping and involve her in all the projects. If you disagree with her, try to take her attention towards the product you agree with instead of saying no.

I'll second what desi beauti said, make it gradual, and involve them too by asking their opinion and taking your MIL shopping when your looking for home accessories. that way it doesn't look like your taking over, or minimizing their current effort on home decor. wow california! california is a beautiful place with beautiful weather. congrats on your upcoming new venture in life!

I agree :)

The information is not enough for us to give you any valuable reply. Please tell us exactly which street and house number that you are moving to. Adding Zip code to that info is going to help too.

whats your style and budget, thats a key question. I can send you mid century modern type stores and you may come back and kick my rear.

long beach is in bay area..must have been some major earthquake

and pics.

on topic, naqsa, congrats! no more canadian winters or slush, you lucky girl!
i agree with everyone else’s advice in involving your hubby and mil with decisions so they dont feel overwhelmed/underused during the process.

what i would suggest additionally is scouring lots of blogs and sites for design and home design too so you can put together a visual board for the look you are aiming for. people generally tend to be visual creatures and seeing it altogether in print or online will make sure everyone can sign off on the look as a package and can “see” it better in their home.

here are some of the blogs i regularly visit to get you inspired:
Design*Sponge
red.house
Apartment Therapy
Material Girls | Interior Design Blogs | Decorating & Home Décor

yup- my most prized possession is an Eames lounge chair in walnut and black which sits in my home office at an angle by a large window, perfect place to unwind and read, or listen to music.

i would have done my place in all mid century style, but begum thought it was too cold so the compromise is that our look is a soft, sleek, warm, minimalist look, somehow we have managed to do it

Re: Decorating your post-marriage home

I would also look at what they already have and see if you can incorporate that into your vision somehow. So it doesnt look like you're just taking over the place.

Re: Decorating your post-marriage home

Don't make any changes that will peeve off your MIL.

Re: Decorating your post-marriage home

Start with your bedroom and then work on other parts of the house. Also like everyone else says, involve your MIL in the process.

gasp for reals?? that is so cool! i think i need to see a photo tour of your modern minimalist home. you should submit your place to www.apartmenttherapy.com - they love that stuff!

my dream MCM pieces are a pair of Barcelona chairs in white leather. real ones. authentico chair-o’s. i know they’re $4000 each but i can dream!
also, i want to name my future son Mies van der Rohe. it actually goes really well with our last name too haha

and also also, your kids needs these (and so do you!) - love! http://www.houseind.com/objects/collaborations/eameshouseblocks
