Declaring jewelry at JFK on the way to Pakistan

Im going to Pakistan and need to take some jewelry with me. I will be travelling through JFK (New York). I want to declare it because I dont want any trouble when I come back, with them not believing that I took it from here and charging me customs. Does anyone know the process to declare it?

Thanks!

Re: Declaring jewelry at JFK on the way to Pakistan

you don't have to declare anything at the departure airport in your country of residence. you just check-in your bags at the airline counter. you better carry jewelry in your carry on bag or in your purse for safety reasons.

you do NOT go through the customs at the departure airport in your own country.

yes, upon arrival in Pakistan, you have to declare your jewelry if it's for your personal use and/or above the allowable limit. you declare this on the Landing Card that you fill out on the plane before landing in Karachi.

the Pakistani customs official will give you the inventory of your jewelry which you have to get re-stamped upon departure from Pakistan which you show it to the customs officer at JFK upon arrival back in the US.

Thank you! The jewelry is for my personal use though. I will be wearing it for a wedding.

I dont think you need to say anything at pakistani airport either. They'll ask you basic questions and respond as per that. You are not taking jewelry for trade or make profit. Personal items should be ok at either destiny.

i dunno about Pakistan but most counties require you to fill out that country's Customs and Immigration 'Landing Card' which asks you to mention what you are bringing into the country above your personal exemptions. jewelry needs to be reported in order to avoid paying duty and to bring it back to your country without paying duty in your own country of residence. cash above a certain amount has to be declared. she has to declare the jewelry and other valuable items.

Also, when you come back you don't have to declare anything you took with you from the US. Only if you are bring new stuff. But they will question you if you say that you are bring something new. They will ask you about the cost and if it was a gift etc. Again nothing to declare if you took it with you and it is property.
