Malala Yousafzai picks up her Nobel Peace Prize this Wednesday, but the youngest ever laureate already has an even more startling memento from her young life: the blood-soaked school uniform she wore when shot by the Taleban.
The 17-year-old Pakistani known everywhere as Malala shares the peace prize with the Indian campaigner Kailash Satyarthi, 60, who has fought for 35 years to free thousands of children from virtual slave labour.
Their pairing has the extra symbolism of linking neighbouring countries that have been in conflict for decades. After being named, Malala said she hoped both states’ prime ministers would attend the prize-giving ceremony in Oslo.
Malala will be the star of the annual Nobels extravaganza, also featuring Frenchman Patrick Modiano with the literature prize and his compatriot Jean Tirole with the economics award.
But visitors to the Nobel Peace Center in Oslo can catch a reminder of the very different circumstances that led to Malala’s rise in the international spotlight.
The center has on loan the uniform the then 15-year-old Malala was wearing in 2012 when a Taleban gunman shot her on a school bus in response to her campaign for girls’ education.
“My school uniform is very important to me… The day I was attacked I was wearing this uniform. I was fighting for my right to go to school,” she said in a statement as the uniform was handed over to the centre on Friday.
“Wearing a uniform made me feel that yes, I am a student,” she said about the uniform. “It is an important part of my life. Now I want to show it to children, to people all around the world. This is my right, it is the right of every child, to go to school.”
Although Malala’s head wound was almost fatal, she recovered after being flown for extensive surgery in Birmingham and she has remained in England with her family since — continuing both her education and activism.
She is travelling to Norway with five other teenage activists from Pakistan, Syria and Nigeria, including Shazia Ramzan, 16, and Kainat Riaz, 17, also shot during the Taleban attack on Malala and 17-year-old Amina Yusuf, a girls’ education activist from northern Nigeria where the terror group Boko Haram abducted more than 200 schoolgirls during a raid in April 2014.
“Though I will be one girl receiving this award, I know I am not a lone voice,” Malala said in a statement on Monday. “These courageous girls are not just my friends, they are now my sisters in our campaign for education for every child.”
Malala’s co-winner Satyarthi is far less well known and said on arrival in Norway that being awarded the Nobel had hugely boosted awareness of millions of children in bonded labour.
“These issues of child slavery, child marriages, child labour, child trafficking… were largely neglected, but now they have gained tremendous attention,” he said.
“I strongly feel that this is an honour for all the children in the world and the children who are most deprived of their childhood, their education, their health, their rights and their dignity.”
Meanwhile, the Nobel prizes for literature, economics and science will be handed out in neighbouring Stockholm.
French author Patrick Modiano, notoriously ill at ease with the media, has described winning the literature award for his novels set in Nazi-occupied France as a surreal experience.
“I was surprised. It was like I was split in two and was observing what was happening to me,” the 69-year-old told reporters in Stockholm on Saturday, adding that he was gradually getting used to “these astounding events”.
Fellow Frenchman, 61-year-old economist Jean Tirole, from the Toulouse School of Economics, is being honoured for his work on reining in corporate giants.
The announcement in October gave French Prime Minister Manuel Valls a chance to hit back at critics of France’s sluggish economy, tweeting, “talk about thumbing your nose at French bashing”.
The science prizes are traditionally dominated by US researchers, but this year saw non US-based winners on top.
Japanese researchers Isamu Akasaki and Hiroshi Amano, along with US-based but Japanese-born Shuji Nakamura, won the physics prize for inventing blue light emitting diodes (LEDs).
British-American researcher John O’Keefe will pick up the medicine prize with Norwegian couple May-Britt and Edvard Moser for discovering an “inner GPS” that helps the brain navigate.
Eric Betzig and William Moerner of the United States and German-based Stefan Hell will be awarded the chemistry prize for laying the foundations of ultra powerful microscopes.
Nobel winners take home eight million Swedish kronor ($1.1 million, 862,000 euros), which is shared in the case of joint wins.

Re: Dec. 10: Malala going to recieve Nobel Peace prize

I feel like every Pakistani should be proud of her. She won the nobel prize because she has made an impact worldwide. There are many local heros we may have in subcontinent who make big difference to our country but few who touch and impact world and world politics.

10 Ways Malala Yousafzai Has Changed the World - Mic

Update: On Friday, October 10, Malala Yousafzai became the youngest Nobel Peace Prize winner in history when was awarded the 2014 prize along with Indian children’s right activist Kailash Satyarthi. Yousafzai, 17, and Satyarthi, 60, were chosen “for their struggle against the oppression of children and young people, and for the right of all children to education,” the Norwegian Nobel Committee said.
In October 2012, the world watched as the Taliban shot a 15-year old girl named Malala Yousafzai on her way to school. The United Nations declared Friday, July 12 Malala Day in honor of this inspirational young girl and her 16th birthday. She celebrated the day by making her first public appearance and delivering aspeech to the UN Youth Assembly, which only emphasized the many ways that she has changed the world at such a young age.

  1. She has sparked a dialogue about children’s education throughout the worldThere are currently 57 million children who have no access to education. Vuk Jeremic, the president of the General Assembly of the United Nations, stated, “Today we stand united with young people from nearly one hundred countries in seeking to ensure that no child is barred from attending school — convinced that factors like geography, gender, disability, language, wealth, and ethnicity, should not be seen as impediments to this achievement,” in response to Malala’s moving speech.

  2. Three million people have signed the Malala PetitionAt such a young age, she has managed to encourage people to stand together behind a common cause. The Malala Petition(which Malala was the first to sign) urges the United Nations to recommit to Millennium Development Goal 2, which involves universal primary education for children around the world.

  3. Her ability to be fearless is inspiring beyond measureWhen she was 11 years old, Malala wrote a diary under the pseudonym Gul Makai in which she discussed life (specifically education) under the Taliban. This diary was published by BBC Urdu. If her identity was ever revealed it was obvious that she would suffer grave consequences. Yet she continued to write and educate other individuals about the conditions in Pakistan. Through her writings, her subsequent shooting, and her inspiring speech at the UN, she has showed us all that we should never give up on a cause we believe in.

  4. She has created the Malala FundThe Malala Fund, which will officially launch this fall, has been established in order to ensure that beyond the words of her speech, tangible results are reached in the fight for access to education.

  5. She has taught us all about forgivenessOne of the most moving moments of her speech was when she said, “I do not even hate the Talib who shot me. Even if there is a gun in my hand and he stands in front of me. I would not shoot him.”

  6. She has shown us that there is no age limit to stand up against injusticeMalala has been sharing her diaries with BBC since she was 11 and celebrated her 16th birthday speaking at the UN about a cause she believes in. Because of her remarkable story, in February 2013 she was the youngest individual to ever be nominatedfor a Nobel Peace Prize.

  7. Her story has reminded children throughout the world not to take anything for grantedSo many children take the simple action of going to school for granted on a daily basis. Malala’s story and her fight to attend school has reminded everyone, children and adults alike, to not take anything for granted in our lives.

  8. She has challenged us all to wage a war…against illiteracy and terrorism by “picking up our books and pens.”

  9. She has illustrated the importance of peaceful conflict resolutionInspired by leaders such as Mahatma Gandhi, Malala has resorted to peaceful solutions in order to tackle the issues of girls’ education and the equality of women.

  10. She has caused the UN to recommit to Millennium Development Goal 2This goal states that “by 2015, children everywhere, boys and girls alike, will be able to complete a full course of primary schooling.” After Malala delivered her speech, United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki Moon statedthat the UN is committed to providing education to all children through itsGlobal Education First Initiative.

Just because some people have got nobel prize who may not have earnt it like Obama doesn’t make the contribution of Nobel peace prize winners like Mother Theresea any less important.

Re: Dec. 10: Malala going to recieve Nobel Peace prize

I am proud of her but if someone think that every Pakisani is, they are in disconnect. Actually a good number of Pakisani actually hate her.

Re: Dec. 10: Malala going to recieve Nobel Peace prize

what i found most touching about Malala is that she is ready to even forgive the Taliban who shot her. Very Martin Luther King/Gandhiesque of her.

People say she hasn’t done anything but she has done many things and is working on many projects to help the underprivileged worldwide. Quite remarkable for a child her age.

This is from a Pakistani friend’s fb page

Malala hasn’t done much..she’s just spurred 3 million people to sign the Malala petition, helped send 40 girls in Pakistan to school through the Malala fund, pushed the UN to recommit to educating every child by 2015, inspired Malala day on 12th July, and committed to providing food and education to 300 000 Syrian refugees in Lebanese schools. She has not spoken bad of her homeland and her people. She has spoken to Obama about drones and said they create more people who think of terrorism rather than stopping terrorism.

This is the Malala fund site. It also features other brave Pakistani girls who have gone through same experience as Malala.

Malala Malala

Also if Malala’s winning of nobel prize gives a bad image to world about education in Pakistan, then surely Kailash’s Satyarthi’s winning gives bad image to world of mistreatment and abuse of children in India? I don’t understand how highlighting issues is a bad thing. If issues are not highlighted then how can they be changed.

Re: Dec. 10: Malala going to recieve Nobel Peace prize

Maybe that will change. There is lot of misinformation about her online. The media instead of highlighting her achievements just feeds into people’s worries/fears/anxieties about her. Maybe when they come to see the good work she will do in next few years they will change their mind.
One can only hope. I am proud of her as a desi. People say she does not live in Pakistan so how can she do anything living in UK. You don’t have to live in a country to contribute to it. Hundreds of thousands of Pakistanis living abroad contribute to their country through fundraising and charities.

According to Malala fund they have projects helping children in Pakistan, Jordan, Kenya and Nigeria.

Malala Fund

In Pakistan the Malala fund is providing education and communities of support to girls in exploitative domestic child labour.

In Nigeria the Malala fund supports safe spaces for school girls and mentoring for girls married young and who did not have chance to go to school. She also supports the bring our girls back campaign.

In Jordan the Malala fund has started informal education programs for children who have dropped out of school
In Kenya the Malala fund works with partners to provide funding for school expansion and infrastructure.

If you check this link you can see the photos of Malala fund and Malala helping Syrian refugees and girls in Kenya and Nigeria.

Malala Fund

So she is highlighting issues faced by females in many other countries and in developing countries worldwide. support “safe space” projects for schoolgirls and provide mentoring and support to girls who were married young and have no opportunity to go to school.

The blood-stained clothes are the one which she was wearing on the day she was shot by Taliban gunmen while on her way home from school.
The grim garments will be shown at the Nobel Peace Centre in Oslo and will be part of an exhibition to honour present and past Nobel Peace Prize laureates as this year’s prize is awarded to Malala Yousafzai and Kailash Satyarth in the Oslo City Hall on December 10.

Yes, the jahil and brainwashed haters of the ‘west’ dislike the west acknowledging her.

Every other Pakistani is extremely proud of Malala :jhanda:

Re: Dec. 10: Malala going to recieve Nobel Peace prize

I am also proud of her as a desi female. Even though I am not a Pakistani I think all Pakistanis/desis should be proud of her. I wish India also had a global female figure like Malala who is continuing to do good work.

She is a heroine to rest of world. A lot of people are inspired by her father and his support for his daughter. He is seen as a role model father worldwide

Re: Dec. 10: Malala going to recieve Nobel Peace prize

I think it is cute that Satyarthi and Malala are joining hands and Satyarthi says he will work together with “daughter” Malala. Together they symbolise the best a liberal India and Pakistan have to offer to the world.

Satyarthi says will work together with ‘daughter’ Malala - Pakistan - DAWN.COM

Indian Nobel Peace Prize laureate Kailash Satyarthi on Tuesday said that he will work together with ‘his daughter’, Pakistani campaigner for girls’ education and the youngest-ever Nobel Peace Prize recipient Malala Yousafzai.
Kailash and Malala were speaking at a joint press conference at the Norwegian Nobel Institute organised for the winners of the prestige prize, a day before they receive the award at a formal ceremony at the Oslo City Hall on Wednesday.
Kailash, an Indian anti child-labour activist and head of the South Asian Coalition Against Child Servitude, has previously pledged to join hands with Malala “to fight for peace” between the two neighbouring nuclear-armed countries.

People who say she is taking the limelight and not sharing it with other women who have been shot are wrong. She is taking 5 other inspiring girl champions to the ceremony not only from Pakistan but around world. She is taking her school friends from Swat., Shazia Ramzan and Kainat Riaz, Kainat Soomro from Sindh, Mezon Almellehan from Syria and Amina Yusuf from Nigeria. How can she be showing bad image for Pakistan when she is taking other girls from other countries who have faced similar struggles?

“We all are standing together and telling the world that we are here to fight for our rights; that it is alright to go to school. Why should it be neglected? Why are we fighting for something which we deserve?” she told a conference room in Oslo packed with journalists from around the world.

**She is proud of her religion and proud to be Pakistani. She said she will definitely return. **

“In this world in which we are thinking we have achieved so much development, then why is it that there are so many countries where children are not asking for any iPads or computers…what they are for is just a book and just a pen?
“So why can’t we do that? Why can’t we just give a book and a pen to children? And why can’t we just give a school to children which can really change their future?” she said.
Answering a question, she said it was her belief that Islam is a religion of peace and humanity.
“Islam is all about getting knowledge and discovering the world. Unfortunately those people who stand against education, they themselves are uneducated,” she said.
“In Islam, education is not just a right, it is a duty. There is a specific Hadith. In Islam, [education] is a necessity of life,” she said.

She is also proud to be Pakistani.
Answering another question from a journalist, Malala said that Pakistan was her home, and that she would ‘definitely’ go back to her home one day.
“When I was in Swat, I used to see other children going to work in other people’s homes while I was going to school.
**“It is my ambition, my dream, to see every child in Pakistan getting education. I will definitely go back to Pakistan,” she said, to which Kailash joking reminded her not to leave her ‘father’ behind when she goes to Pakistan.
**
I can see why Satyarthi would want her to be his daughter. Any father would be proud to have such a daughter

Re: Dec. 10: Malala going to recieve Nobel Peace prize

She has made us proud. We need more Malala's. Her courage and dignity is something to be proud of. Her achievement at such young age are brilliant.

May Allah bless her and keep her away form harms way.

Re: Dec. 10: Malala going to recieve Nobel Peace prize

Just like she was never shot despite the claim from TTP pigs, the keyboard jehadists would have you believe otherwise, these clothes are also not hers or the west has dyed them and look like her blood soaked clothes.
