**Palestinian Toll Tops 500 After Deadliest Day of Israeli Siege**
The Israeli assault on [Gaza](http://www.democracynow.org/topics/gaza) has seen its bloodiest day so far, bringing the Palestinian death toll to more than 500. More than 100 Palestinians were killed in a 24-hour period between Saturday and Sunday nights. The dead include 72 residents of Shejaiya, one of Gaza’s poorest and most densely populated neighborhoods, where Israeli forces carried out their single worst attack so far. Survivors called the carnage a "massacre," and U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon called it an "atrocious action." Eighteen Israeli soldiers have died in Gaza since Thursday, when Israel launched a ground invasion it said was aimed at cutting off tunnels used by Hamas. Thirteen of the soldiers died fighting militants in Shejaiya.

Israel Bombs Gaza’s Only Power Plant as Toll Nears 650**
Israel continues to bombard the Gaza Strip amidst talks over a ceasefire. Israeli military attacks today include the bombing of Gaza’s sole power plant and the heavy shelling of Khan Yunis, killing six people and leaving at least 20 wounded. The Palestinian death toll is near 650, including more than 160 children. More than 4,000 have been wounded. According to Gaza officials, 475 houses have been totally destroyed and more than 2,600 homes have been partially damaged. Israel has also struck 46 schools, 56 mosques and seven hospitals. Meanwhile, two more Israeli soldiers have been killed, bringing the Israeli military death toll inside Gaza to 29. A farm worker from Thailand also died inside Israel after being hit by rocket fire from Gaza.

Israeli forces killed an estimated 73 people on Wednesday, including at least 31 in the southern town of Khan Younis. Another 25 people, including three children, were killed in a separate strike on the area earlier today. Hundreds of civilians are said to be trapped in the village of Khuzaa, which has seen heavy violence.

The Health Ministry in Gaza says the dead include 315 children. More than 7,700 people have been wounded. At least 13 people were killed in bombings earlier today.
**U.S. Approves New Weapons Transfer to Israeli Military**
The Israeli attack in Jabaliya marked the sixth time a U.N. school had been struck during Israel’s more than three-week offensive. The Obama administration has condemned the attack on the U.N. school, but has refused to blame or condemn Israel for carrying it out. The Pentagon, meanwhile, has confirmed its approval of an Israeli request to restock Israel’s supplies of ammunition. The United States will provide items from its stockpile inside Israel, including mortar rounds for tanks and ammunition for grenade launchers.
