How would you deal with someone in your team who is loud and extremely over confident with a huge ego? now bear in mind that this person has a strong personality as well as a strong performance as well but his personality is a bit of a problem for few people around him. How would you deal with him , particularly if you are on a lower seniority scale to them and want to be in their good books?

The behaviour of others should not dictate how you conduct yourself with others. If you are in the position of advisor then give good advice ... as long as you perform in accordance with set duties and expectations are met then that should be enough to be self-assured. A person with a strong personality tried to get me to do his tasks and I said to him "Nice try, but if I do this, then who will do my job?"
We all just need to learn how to deflect annoyance from annoying people away ... a secret in life and business is that no one has power over us until we give it to them ... being annoyed with someone is type of power that we give away to them ...
An annoying person at work - who has left now - used to rub lots of people up the wrong way ... He used to say really inappropriate things like "don't they know anything, who would ask that question? My grandma would not ask that question ..." to the client that would make them really boil inside. He tried it with me one day looking at my clothes and said, "What sort of clothes do you call that? We need to get some standards in the office" trying to annoy me ... so I said, "Do you have a problem with my dress sense? So what do you want me to do ... dress up like you? Hahaha ... I'll give it a miss."
If you can't say anything like that then just smile, raise an eyebrow like a disapproving teacher and carry on working ...

This is your best post to date in GS. And it didn't even start with Peace.
Re: Dealing with over confident , egoistic colleague
I am not sure how his large , extremely confident , loud , and huge ego is doing you any damage?
Let him enjoy what he must, and you keep your ego and sense of esteem in check.
Re: Dealing with over confident , egoistic colleague
Its hurting coz its become difficult to hold discussions in a calm peaceful manner. We are always walking on egg shells around him so as not to irritate him, people around him are not as confident about letting out ideas coz he takes a minute to trash not only ideas but also people in the worst possible manner..

People should report his inappropriate behavior to his boss or HR. Letting a bully be a bully is not going to take care of him. Someone has to pop his bubble. HR/his boss does/should care about the productivity of the entire team not just one person. If his bad behavior is impacting the productivity of the entire or majority of the team he should be taken to task. Nobody is indispensable in workplace. People come and people go but show must go on.
I can give you more concrete advise if you need it. I have either dealt with those bullies or advised folks on how to deal with them.
One civil way is to take that person out for lunch and have a heart to heart talk. If that does not work there are other ways to remedy the situation.
Re: Dealing with over confident , egoistic colleague
O wow..what a topic. Well..for this month or so..i have been attending conferences and doing presentations for company i was representing. I was tasked to work with this woman. Huge..ego, with so much over-confidence. What i did..well..took her aside, told her politely that...we are working as a team. I do understand..it can be quiet exciting to work like that..but lets not get carried away. She did understand my point though..eva since..we became good colleagues.

Ignore if you may, confront if you can.
