Dealing with being Fired !

Realistically speaking the most successful of us may have experienced this phenomenon at some point in our respective careers.

For some it may impact in a very demotivating manner, taking the individual off track for a good while before they buck up again and realize there are always more good opportunities out there.

Question now is , how do you deal with the whole impact of being Fired from a job?

Re: Dealing with being Fired !

My wife's cousin recently got fired within her three month's probation. They told her, she didn't have "skill" to perform her job. Usually happens a lot in Canada. She is very depressed and said she had done good job. Never been late etc. And employer gave her very good reviews for first two months. She think it is company's financial reason that they used that excuse.

So she will apply for other jobs and explained it to them what happened and leave it to Allah. Because it is Allah that gives us ultimately, we only give 100 percent of our effort.

Re: Dealing with being Fired !

Good luck to her Hassan. Yes some companies are guilty of this very unethical act and they do it every now and than to manage some one off work load.

Re: Dealing with being Fired !

My previous company where i worked for eight years was a IT giant and superfluously habitual of laying off people every few months. And it was terrible, like really terribly to see even if you are not directly impacted. I remember once i was sitting in my cubicle which was in a big hall and everyone from left/right/ahead/back was taken out by HR and security and pretty much entire hall was vacant. I was just actually waiting for some to come to me and say lets go. Didnt happen but it made me very nervous. I would remember that day as one of the scariest in my career.
And since most of my ex-colleagues were my friends too so i felt aweful.

Some of them found it really hard to get a new job as in IT there was a big slum in the middle.

Technically layoffs are different than firing as there is some lucrative benefits associated with it.

That being said, I want to add up to the original question, how do you feel when there are layoffs or firing in your company even if you survive?

Re: Dealing with being Fired !

i have never been fired from my job, alHamdolillah. if i ever was justifiably fired, i would evaluate the reason given, learn from it and move on. if not justified, i would knock the doors of the courts.

Re: Dealing with being Fired !

A few years ago, I was let go from a temp assignment I had been at for about 6 weeks. The recruiter called me and told me that the client (the company I worked in) did not want me to come back.

I was extremely devastated. It wasn't just the loss of paycheck, it was supposed to be good experience and felt like another blow to something I was struggling to achieve. I was already in a not so great place emotionally, and this hurt my already low confidence & self esteem even more.

Looking back in hindsight, things worked out for the best I'd say..Alhumdulilah....the people I worked with weren't very nice or even ethical (I have many many examples, but the one that sticks out is the owner wanted me to cheat on my timesheet so that she doesn't have to pay me for overtime). After a few weeks of being down in the dumps, I focused my attention and energy on other things and accomplished a few things and made new/better contacts, which led me to where I am right now.

At another job, I was part of a mass layoff, much like the one @SID_NY described. I didn't feel so bad about that because the company had some financial issues, and I wasn't the only one let go and it wasn't personal. (I had taken the first one very personally).

Re: Dealing with being Fired !

That's exactly the scenario I had. I had asked someoen to go to lunch and when they were about to reply, we all got a call to go to HR. There were more rounds of layoffs. I hated being let go because I liked my job and coworkers, but it wasn't as hurtful as wheN I'd been let go.

Now, the company I'm at, there were a few firings, but they assured us it was for performance and not due to finances. Everytime I found out someone was let go, I felt horrible for them, and scared for my own position. What helped was getting positive feedback from my team leaders

Re: Dealing with being Fired !

In case of redundancies , one more or less walks out the door with mutual consent and both parties , particularly the employee is protected short term against having no pay check . Its definitely not as devastating as being fired.

Moving on isnt easy for many people . Particularly if they know they are sharp and did the job to the best of their capabilities. I think it can take a bit of time for people to neutralize their feelings and regain motivation. The fastest way to do that is by landing another job.

Re: Dealing with being Fired !

I am not sure if firing is what I would use here but I was kind of fired from a job once since the employer had lied to me about the working conditions and I found it very difficult to work there. Eventually they told me that its not working for them as well.

Went through a temp agency to work for Anheuser-Busch for a sybase 11 to oracle 9i conversion project that was going to last about 5 years and I told them at the interview that its been 6 years since I last used oracle so I would need some time to catch up on it. They told me that they will give me a month just to understand the system and also there will be a team of 6 people that I will be working with so I could ask questions but came to find out in a week that the work has to be started and there was no team but me. Really had a bad time trying to catch up at work and trying to get by with a newly born daughter in the mix with being diagnosed with sleep apnea.

In this case I preferred being fired over quitting since the market in St. Louis wasnt that good and I wanted to be fired to be able to collect unemployment. I was able to find another job with my temp agency within 10 days.
