Deadline for Iraq has passed...(merged)

Thank you, DT.
One innocent woman or man has already died. i don’t hold out much hope for the 14 injured civilians - not with the current facilities in Iraqi hospitals and the electrical infrastructure that US forces are trying to degrade in their ‘shock and awe’ strategy.

Red Cross will have to appeal for quite a long time. i doubt they will get their money.
Amazing logic here - bomb first, then build later.

The Turkish parliament has passed a motion granting US aircraft the use of Turkish airspace for the war against Iraq.

The bill also authorises the entry of Turkish troops into northern Iraq to stem a potential tide of refugees into the country and to prevent the Kurds forming a separate northern state.

But the new motion leaves most of the US’s military requests unfulfilled.

Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan has said the vote does not permit the planes to use Turkish airbases, even for refuelling.

Neither does it cover the US request for more than 60,000 ground troops to be deployed in the country.

However, the US says any military flights from Europe to Iraq will be much easier if they can fly over Turkish airspace.

Public opposition

The UK has also requested permission for its aircraft to overfly Turkey.

A Turkish diplomatic source told correspondents the British appeal was made in a telephone call between foreign ministers Jack Straw and Abdullah Gul on Wednesday night.

The US had initially asked permission for 62,000 soldiers to be allowed in Turkey, to open a northern front in the Iraq campaign.

Justice Minister Cemil Cicek said talks were continuing on US troop deployment, despite the issue not being included in the motion.

A multi-billion dollar aid package painstakingly negotiated between Ankara and Washington is now thought to be in jeopardy.

There is strong Turkish opposition to a war in Iraq, but the country’s leaders are also worried about alienating the US, correspondents say.

Ground combat has started

Ground troops cross DMZ.
Anti-aircraft fire all over Baghdad.
Large explosions, 3 confirmed ground targets hit.

Hours n hours of the same.

Live video from Baghdad

Initially the news media in US was reporting that Iraq has fired Scud missiles into Kuwaiti positions, and there were air raid sirens in Kuwait and apparently Patriot were fired and took down one.

Then the Iraqi minister said, how could that be true, because Iraq doesn't even have Scud missiles any more.

Sure enough, in a couple of hours, the story changed, and now "speculation" is that these were not scud missiles, but probably Al-Samoud II missiles. No one has seen any of these missiles as yet, so just as American media is still debating whether it was Saddam himself or his double on TV last night, so the world media is probably speculating if there were any missiles launched on Americans at all.

Round One of War Reporting goes to Iraq.

American media is creating a big fuss about possibility of chemical and biological warfare. They are showing American troops doning and taking off gas masks every few minutes. I guess, after a while, this whole thing will become quite counter-productive.

We should all brace for a ton-load of dis-information, psychological tactics and war-hysteria being dished out by all news media in days to come.

The reason everyone kept 'quiet' back then was because it couldn't be ascertained if he actually did gas those people. It was based on claims by the Kurds who escaped into Turkey but no traces of gas were found on them. No evidence was provided. Iraq summarily rejected these accusations and Pentagon reports in 1991 showed that there was every reason to doubt it was Iraqi gas which did this.

Is it now confirmed after 12 or so years?

The President will be (corrected by NYAhmadi).

No, he is meeting with his cabinet, and some of that will be televised...he will take a few questions. I love our president.

It’s useful for the Administration’s case so they can go along with the assertion.. who’s checking?

As for the scud missile news.. I knew it was all assumptions when they said Patriots intercepted it :hehe: Patriots are successful only on paper and in the media.

I am afraid you are right. This is a very sad day indeed. As an American I am truly ashamed. We have always been the one that helped other nations when they are been invaded and now we have become the invader.

The rest of the Middle East and for that matter the world, regardless of what they think of Saddam should pay close attention, as Bush may decide they are next.

The UN is a sick joke, they are going to just sit and watch this horrible thing unfold without lifting a finger too stop it.

May God have mercy on the truly innocent people all over this world.
