The more coffins the country sees, the more the public want out of the war and the more jitters the administration gets considering it's election time.

Do you think that's really how it works? I dunno. I tend to doubt it. What caused that reaction with Vietnam wasn't so much seeing the coffins, but the political screwups, coverups and lying in general. I don't think the coffins or statistics themself really do much to *change people's opinions. They may make people's opinions stronger, but not change them.
But the admin definitely is showing signs of election year jitters. They might just make their fears come true if they keep up the screwups and coverups and lying in general.
The fact that the Pentagon has banned these photo's and fired Tami is a enough of a political screw up. It will now led to more (not less) emphasis on the Iraq war, and American soldiers being killed there.
privacy, respect for dead blah blah, all aside. If photos like these are continually published in main stream media and shown on TV, they will bring home the reality that all is not hunky-dory in Iraq and more importantly the war is not over by any means.

I think only really self-deluded people would believe the war was over the day Bush fell on an aircraft carrier and let the words dribble down his chin, we just happen to have them all on this website (well about 5 of them).
Coffins are good, lots of them, show them all the graves too and the morgues and hospitals. Let’s see the real carnage, blood and guts that are part and parcel of war.
Let's also hear why these people, soldiers (who gives a sh*t it's their job) and civilians are dying?! This isn't some peace-keeping force over in Iraq like the American one sent to Rwanda and Sudan in the nick of time.
This is a full scale invasion under false pretexts which is responsible for countless thousands of murders in the name of saving people from murder?!
The real sickening kicker is that something this vile is all too easily sold to the American public.

Imdad,
Might feel different if it hits you at home. If it was one of yours.

The difference between people with morals and liberals is that for liberals a death means defeat and surrender. For others, it means anger and vengence.
The west often complain about North Korea for censorship such as what news its people hear, and that is lambasted as blatant censorship and propaganda,
while the US hides behind the air of freedom, and successive administrations feed the propaganda, only they call it ‘news management’.
Whats difference between US and North Korea both want to control what thier people see, hear and think!

I don't understand it either. But then Americans are unwilling to acknowledge their dead in Iraq too...thus the unwilingness to show the coffins coming home. Wtf?
The names of the deceased are published everyday in teh NYTimes. There are websites keeping tallies. It is obviously not the same thing. the issue was whether the picture should be shown or not, it has nothing to do with acknowledgement of death.
Local ABC affiliate pulls plug on “Nightline” special
The owner of the Triad’s local ABC affiliate pulled the plug on a Friday “Nightline” special in which Ted Koppel will read the names of all 530 soldiers killed by hostile fire since the start of the war in Iraq, the company confirmed today.
Should the names of these ‘brave’ souls be hidden away like some seedy dirty little secret?
Is this war for WMD…strike that…freedom…strike that…oil and regional power not going as planned? Were the power crazed administration hoping for no dead?..even after the shock and awe campaign? No dead on their side I guess.
This evil empire built on stilts of glass can’t even now mention the names of the dead, only just reveals flag draped coffins and spins every defeat into …well defeat, they need to spin even harder.
Come on expound your ideas.
Why this 1984’esque treatment for the american sheeple?
It is stupid to read the names of the dead on national tv. If it is done as part of a memorial service then yes. But we get the names in newspapers and websites anyway. What is the big deal if Koppel reads it. Just more media hype..
He should read the names of the 9/11 victims every day, 10 a day so we remember... :(
Funny how that station pulled him because Koppel is supposedly doing this for a “political agenda”. But the station owners seem to be major Republicandonators?
