**Success, Forever: ‘DDLJ’ Celebrates 800 Glorious Weeks!
By MovieTalkies.com, 11 February 2011
At a time when super hit films barely manage to complete eight weeks in theatres and box office duds end their cinematic run on the eighth day itself, ‘DDLJ’ has achieved the incredible distinction of playing for 800 continuous weeks at Maratha Mandir theatre in Mumbai.
YRF’s glossy romantic drama shot all over the lovely locales of Switzerland became a phenomenal hit with the masses after its release in 1995. Kajol became the heartbeat of the nation with her rain song and dance sequence and the mandolin strumming Shah Rukh charmed women across all generations with his dimpled smile. He used to placate his on screen ‘Senorita’ with what went on to become the film’s most popular dialogue, “Bade bade desho mein, aisi choti choti baatein hoti rehti hain”. But this is certainly no small feat!
Aditya Chopra’s directorial debut has had an uninterrupted streak of almost 16 years, a landmark in Indian cinematic history, especially in today’s DVD era. Even after all these years, enthusiastic cine goers still throng to Maratha Mandir.
Audiences chuckle at Anupam Kher’s ‘Pops’ character, sing along with Shah Rukh, hold back tears as Simran pleads with her ‘Bauji’ to let her go and erupt into cheers when she finally jumps on to the moving train.
The theater itself, an unassuming single screen at Mumbai Central, has become synonymous with Raj and Simran’s trans continental love story. But this is not the first time that the theater has been in the spotlight.
Thirty five years before Shah Rukh serenaded Kajol, Madhubala bewitched Dilip Kumar with her mesmerizing eyes and graceful dancing in ‘Mughal e Azam’. The magnum opus ran for six years in Maratha Mandir (the first three were housefull) and created a record at that time.
The film’s freshness and the lead pair’s crackling chemistry make ‘DDLJ’ one of the most loved romantic films in Hindi cinema. Here’s hoping this timeless tale runs for another 800 weeks and filmmakers use it as an inspiration to make more such marvellous movies!**
