The people are going to have to pry Egypt out of Mubarak's cold dead hands. Something tells me that we won't ever see a Ben Ali like exit from Mubarak, he is going to have to be physically forced out of Egypt.
Re: "Day of Revolution" in Egypt
Channel 4's foreign affairs correspondent has said that his reliable source says that Mubarak has told the US Ambassador that he will not leave.
Re: "Day of Revolution" in Egypt
Mubarak due to address on state run TV, offering a "solution".
Any guesses? Of course a promise for a "free and fair" election in September and his willingness to abstain from running for next term.
Re: "Day of Revolution" in Egypt
This is what Bin Ali of Tunisia tried to do and had to do in the end:-
13 Jan: President Ben Ali promises to step down in 2014
14 Jan: President dissolves government and parliament, then steps down
Mubarak may cling on for more than a day but he is a goner.
Re: "Day of Revolution" in Egypt
He is on tele now.
Re: "Day of Revolution" in Egypt
Seems like fair solution has been reached, a power transition to take place with elections excluding Mubarak this fall which leaves Egypt with no power vacuum before then. The people have won and security remains intact.
Re: "Day of Revolution" in Egypt
what solution? do you see people returning? people arent willing to see him get an honorable exit, and dont trust him to conduct the next elections.

Too little too late. Tomorrow it will become clear whether people are going to accept it. It is upto the people of Egypt whether to accept it or not and not anyone else.

We can say that IF Egyptians also agree to this "solution". Apparently only Cairo and White house mutually have reached to this solution. Besides, this solution doesn't guarantee that some other stooge with full support/backing of state/State's machinery will not take his place.
Re: "Day of Revolution" in Egypt
First Tunisia, then Lebanon and now Egypt. Jordan and Yemen next it appears.
Pro-West and Pro-Israel regimes going down one by one.
Re: "Day of Revolution" in Egypt
Apparently a small pro-Mubarak crowd has just arrived on the scene... between 30-40 people.
Re: "Day of Revolution" in Egypt
^ In Alexandria. So it begins.
Re: "Day of Revolution" in Egypt
its turning violent now
Re: "Day of Revolution" in Egypt
Shots fired (in the air).
Re: "Day of Revolution" in Egypt
Looks like the situation is under control again.

Absolutely. I hope this announcement allows negotiations to take place on how the country is run before elections take place. While dragging a dictator out of his palace is a great symbolic display I don't think in this case helps the country or the stability of the region and would leave a dangerous power void. The protesters are the ones who have forced open this door and now those representing the protesters can step through it and complete the transition of power in a peaceful manner or, as they did before, the opposition can rejected talks and go on with the protest. Time for a serious look at the risk/reward of each action.

I don't think they are going to trust words of Mobarak.
