Events in Tunisia may have inspired the largest street protests ever to challenge President [(The Palestinian Authority - The New York Times). In both cases, they largely feel betrayed.
The grievances are economic, social, historic and deeply personal. Egyptians, like Tunisians, often speak of their dignity, which many said has been wounded by Mr. Mubarak’s monopoly on power, his iron-fisted approach to security and corruption that has been allowed to fester.
Watching Mubarak's speech right now, honestly I think it's just going to piss the people off even more. He's pretty much insulting the intelligence of the protesters, it sounds like he thinks the people will just eat up his bull**** propaganda and lies. He doesn't even realize that the main target of these protests is himself, not just the entire government. Changing the government is not going to change anything as long as he or anyone close to him is still running the government.
It's funny, even Ben Ali offered more to the Tunisians before he was chased out of the country.
^I agree. If he had outrightly condmened the protest and threatened to take action, he might have scared off people. By saying that governmemt will be dissolved and new on instated, i think will encourage more protests.
According to Al Jazeera, even more people poured out on the streets after Mubarak's pathetic speech.

He probably would have been better off just proclaiming himself the pharaoh of Egypt.
same as before so-called Islamist's are having wet dreams, the great thing about these riots which are started from Tunisia is their demands. The people want democracy, rule of law, jobs, safety & prosperity ....NOT be-headings, suicide attacks, cutting of hands/foots & blowing up girls schools .
All the young population is on the street, and they don't want so-called Shariaah. Tunisia example is their to see.
It's a pity secular degenerates are ignorant of history or are just selectively ignorant...just go back to the early nineties and the last time a free and fair election were held in North Africa, i.e. in Algeria, and what your secular patrons in France and America did to co-opt democracy and rule of law in that case....

There are some people worried that if these dictators go away then Islamists will come in power. This may or may not happen. It all depends on people.
But even if they do come in power by people's choice, my prediction is that people will quickly get fed up of their extremism. The worst scenario for an extremist movement is for it to get to rule its own way. Many people the extremists while they are in opposition, but when they come to power only then they show their true colors. And only then people realize what a losers they are.
That's what happened to Qaeda in Iraq, to extremists in Kashmir and to Taliban in Sawat.

Yeah, but religous extremist dont go quitly into the night so easily. They believe they have a divine mission, so they wont acquiesce to the demands of the people so easily. These Religous fanatics consider themselves Gods anointed, so what would the people know?!?!
If this happens then this will be a punishment for their folly. And they would deserve that punishment.
Besides, I think Western countries ("America") will be more than willing to topple such a government by providing support to those who will rise up in that case.
Democracy is obviously really uncertain form of government. We never know who will appear as a leader tomorrow and what his policies would be.
It's a dilemma that all countries face. Having a democracy is not a panacea for all problems, but if we agree that alternative systems of government are even worse than we (some style of) democracy is the only system we can try.

Whoever tells America to stick it and opens up its borders to Gaza has my support.
Same here. I like El Baradei, smart educated man who has experience in a political role and I think he would be the perfect president. I also don't mind the Brotherhood, I feel like they get a negative rep here in the west because their politics are rooted in Islam, but the fact of the matter is that they renounced violence years ago, are a willing democratic participant, and they are fairly moderate as well, only slightly more conservative than the ruling AKP party in Turkey.
What you two ABCDs don't understand is that the Muslim Brotherhood will win in any free and fair elections. They are not in favour of Shariah at all. They are however a solid democratic movement. They have grassroots levels support from Aswan to Alexandria. They have solid educated and middle class politicians and more important they are representative across all social strata of Egyptian society.
Just like the GIA, the Muslim Brotherhood will win in any free and fair elections held in Egypt.
And till date Obama has been weak as hell on Egypt. Reagan created history by standing with the Eastern Bloc and breaking down the Iron Curtain. Obama will be known to be the guy that attempted to stall the spread of democracy in the Middle East. I certainly hope the military switches sides and joins the people.
