Personally I don’t like the American way of date configuration, that’s used here.
It allways tends to confuse me.
Now if you look at the European way of date, then it’s quite logical.
Day comes before Month and Month before Year. Its going from small to big, where as in the American system, its starts off with the Month.
American:

09-07-2003
MM-DD-YYYY
**
European:
**
07-09-2003
DD-MM-YYYY

Is there any way to use the other one ?
Yes, it can be changed. But whatever setting there is, will be for ALL members, and since an over-whelming number of members, not to mention Mods and Admin are from USA, so the US convention will stay. Tough luck Europeans 
ps. Whoever gave you the absurd idea, that Americans are logical people? 
It would be nice, if that date format could be set individually (in the profile), but I'm afraid that's not possible yet.
