Data usage question

I got a message from T-Mobile today telling me that I have used 1.5 GB out of my 2 GB of high speed web access. I don’t want to upgrade to the 5 GB package so I went to my settings and checked my data usage. This is what it showed:

Sept. 23-30: about 1.59 GB used

Dropbox: 1.03 GB
Chrome: 266 MB
Media: 129 MB
Swype Beta: 107 MB

etc etc…

Could this be because I was uploading 14 video clips I made to Dropbox yesterday so I could access them on my laptop? :bummer:. Any other advice on how I could limit my data usage?

Re: Data usage question

dont you connect your cell with wif when you are at home? My account status is showing 97 MB. Looks like I am paying extra money for no reason. :bummer:

Re: Data usage question

Yes I do.

Even at my school I have wifi. I guess I just started the process and left home, was out for a while yesterday. I'm not sure how this works.

Re: Data usage question

dont use drop box with huge file while traveling in city where you cant find wifi spot. :chai:

next masla.

Re: Data usage question

Well, that's how I transfer files. I guess I just have to be more tactful, perhaps pause syncing when I'm out of the house.

Re: Data usage question

:hehe: I mean be careful with big files.

Re: Data usage question

waisy, you can upload your videos on youtube with private settings. and next time you can stream them anywhere. yeh bar bar ki downloading aik jhanjhat hai. :@:

Re: Data usage question

^^I needed the mp4 files to make a short movie in Final Cut Pro. Uploading them on YouTube would be a waste of time.

Re: Data usage question

I think you answered your own question just be careful not to upload big files and switch to wifi whenever you can.

lol and yes this is because of uploading the videos. It was 1GB alone.

Re: Data usage question

Is it possible to set a limit on it? And this 'll be only done by your network company?

Re: Data usage question

In DB there’s a setting to upload photos and videos when on Wifi ONLY. Make sure you turn that option on.
Also, Swype shouldn’t be moving things back and forth from the internet. Maybe the first time when the helper app downloads the main app. If you are rooted use DroidWall to block internet traffic from applications that don’t/shouldn’t be needing it.

Also, there’s this app called Ad Network Detector (by Lookout Labs) that finds the apps (and the ad company) and what activity and access it has. This keeps you better informed on what’s going on on your Android device.

Re: Data usage question

i’d say it, but i’d get shot. :stuck_out_tongue:

but 1.5GB in 7 days  are you sure the phone is actually on wifi when you think it is?

Re: Data usage question

Queer, say it.

Re: Data usage question

Will get that app.

Yes I do have that option on DP already. Dunno why I have this strange feeling my wifi was not connected at all, although I never disabled it. Checked all my settings today. Hope things are in order now.

Re: Data usage question

Looks like I’m faring well.

I’m back to minimal usage of my data plan. Also, I installed the Ad Network Detector app. Did a scan. Here’s a screenshot:

So given that this app can find out which networks can display ads or collect personal data from my phone, I think I’m doing alright. I think I understand.

Re: Data usage question

that’s what i was thinking wth!

i had to monitor my sisters data usage when she’s out, her last phone bill nearly killed me.

nikky, you’ve turned into an android monster :frowning:

I don't think I can add anything to what has already been said here.. :)

Re: Data usage question

I’m just using my phone to it’s fullest :snooty:

Re: Data usage question

My brother and I have turned our dad into a android monster too. :hehe: He is always streaming on his phone (usually news and geo shows though). Uses way more data than me.

Re: Data usage question

Well good for him!

The hubby does that too, Netflix. At home tho. (And then he says he misses his iPhone )
