Data leakage

Suppose I have a confidential word file people are looking to steal from me.

Lets list various ways it can go out from my laptop if someone is using my laptop, how can he steal it?

Ill start:

by copying it in a USB drive.

Re: Data leakage

Assuming the word file isn’t encrypted?

Via bluetooth

By emailing the file to himself

Re: Data leakage

Just stream it man

Re: Data leakage

sharing over network (if any connected)

Re: Data leakage

If it is confidential file why is it not password protected ?

Re: Data leakage

^ Because men are like so inept at technology

Re: Data leakage

FTP upload ..

Re: Data leakage

Maybe because Microsoft office password protection is just superb!

Keep em coming guys.

Print Screen.

Re: Data leakage

yeh file isnt encrypted because in this scenariom I am a common user and not too savvy with encryption tools.

Re: Data leakage

A trojan horse - for example the person using your laptop may download an innocent looking exe (for a game, screensaver) which is a trojan - it will surreptitiously copy the word doc to another location which this person can later access

Re: Data leakage

Saby is actually seeking ideas to steal somebodys file from their laptop . DO NOT give him any more of these dirty ideas

Re: Data leakage

^ LOL, Saby is the last one who needs ideas..hes an IT geek

Re: Data leakage

if its networked, a zillion and one ways.

else, snapshots with phone cam page by page.

if no phone cam, xerox the laptop screen page by page

oh and mm.. disguise/embed it after running it thru suitable conditioning into an image or pdf or some other harmless sounding file, and have you email me that file later. thanks pal.

Re: Data leakage

Oye Bond, 1970’s called. They want their micro-camera back :hehe:

Re: Data leakage

^ LOL :hehe:

queer: Assume its networked of course. List some of those zillion ways. Should be interesting!

LucyMay: Interesting idea but if an AV is installed, it may not work.

Zareen: I have enough ideas of my own. I am just doing some research :stuck_out_tongue:

cdg: Dont call me a geek!

Re: Data leakage

good luck with your assignment

Re: Data leakage

If i wanted to steal something I’d put a little trojan in ur computer so I don’t have to be at your computer. My little “helper” will keep finding the right files and send it to me at heart’s desire. Maybe even build in remote access functionality in it while I’m at it.

Re: Data leakage

^you mean a trojan not detectable by common anti-virus?? since an anti-virus is in place …i think..

Re: Data leakage

AV doesn’t detect everything. How else would you account for all the infections that take over the computers even with AV installed? AV is just to keep out the “honest” trojan out. Just like we put locks on our front doors and think “all is well”.

Re: Data leakage

But a good and quality AV will perform a behavioral analysis of the processes running and can detect an unwanted one.

But okay, I will mark that as one very plausible way.
