saw it for the first time yesterday.
i cannot believe that a blatant rip off ie matrix.. that matched this movie often to the extent of copying scenes.. villains and heros, was such a hit while i hadnt heard of this one..
Yeah I believe they were made around the same time, a bit of movie trivia if Dark City was released a few weeks earlier it might have been "the matrix". Although to be honest I liked Dark City :p
no apparently dark city is 1998, matrix is 1999.. though i guess the work could've overlapped.
hm.. similarities are too stark though. stylised villains.. the resemblance between the way the chief villain talks to the hero.. one 'different' hero who is somehow the savior because he can control the machines, one teacher who initiates the hero and tells him whats going on. self serving entities that keep humans in simulations for their own purposes. people in coats flying around fighting in mid air. even the scene with the knife (bullet) being stopped in mid air and sent back was hoisted..
there were similarities with the 13th floor too. you could never leave the city.
i thought dark city was more creepy though, very atmospheric even sans the kung fu and special effects and bullets in slow mo. and it raised more questions than matrix.
anyway..
never hard of it...
but will sure see it
Productiona and distribution are two different things...Dark City was the superior movie (plot wise)...and I think Jennifer Connelly is better looking than carie ann moss ..Matrix had more of a wow factor tho..
