Re: Daring Investors Brave Pakistan Market : WSJ
Whatever rocks your boat.
‘Foreign investors’ started coming in and the market started going up during PPP era…after SECP declared that IIFs will not be questioned on their source of funds. That brought in a huge influx that took the market from 15,000 levels to almost 21,000.
Enter Nawaz Sharif, the best buddy of big business. He announced a tax amnesty scheme, which benefits all stock brokers, among others. Market shoots up to 26,000.
The misguided notion of foreign investors need to be corrected. Most of the ‘foreign investment’ is that of Pak businesses, who have parked their funds overseas, in order to evade taxes, or just stash black money away.
Moreover, there is a saying in the stock market about ‘foreign’ investors. “forun buyers…forun atay hain..forun chalay jatay hain”. Back in 2005, the market ballooned from a value of 6,000 to almost 16,000, only to crash back to 4,000. I pray that doesnt happen again.
