Danish Muslims file suit over Muhammad cartoons

A group of 27 Muslim organizations has filed a defamation lawsuit against the newspaper that first published the caricatures of the Prophet Muhammad that led to protests around the world.

The lawsuit was filed Wednesday, two weeks after Denmark’s top prosecutor declined to press criminal charges, saying the drawings that sparked a firestorm in the Muslim world did not violate laws against racism or blasphemy.

Michael Christiani Havemann, a lawyer representing the Muslim groups, said the lawsuit sought the equivalent of about $18,800 Cdn in damages from Carsten Juste, editor-in-chief of Jyllands-Posten newspaper, and culture editor Flemming Rose, who supervised the cartoon project.

“We’re seeking judgment for both the text and the drawings, which were gratuitously defamatory and injurious,” Havemann told the Associated Press.

The Danish newspaper apologized for offending Muslims after violent protests erupted around the world, but stood by its decision to print the drawings, citing freedom of speech.

The newspaper published the 12 cartoons on Sept. 30, with an accompanying text saying it was challenging self-censorship among artists afraid to offend Islam. The drawings were later reprinted in other Western media, mostly in Europe, in the name of free speech and news value.

A handful of Canadian newspapers also published the cartoons, including a student newspaper in Prince Edward Island and the Western Standard magazine in Alberta.

The Danish lawsuit claims the cartoons depict Muhammad “as belligerent, oppressing women, criminal, crazy and unintelligent, and a connection is made between the Prophet and war and terror.”

It also claimed the drawings were published “solely to provoke and mock not only the Prophet Muhammad but also the Muslim population.”

Many Muslims object to showing any image of the prophet, since depicting him risks insulting him or encouraging idolatry.

One of the drawings showed Muhammad wearing a turban shaped as a bomb with a burning fuse.

I believe this is what should’ve been done in the first place rather than the episode of burning flags and buildings, and chanting slogans filled with hatred. Violent protests and other shenanigans should’ve never occurred in the first place and the case should’ve been taken to court in a civil manner.

Aside from that, what I don’t understand is why would the Danish government apologize to Muslims, yet state that there was nothing wrong with what was published. I don’t see how the two add together or make any sense.

Re: Danish Muslims file suit over Muhammad cartoons

Exactly, this should have been done earlier... Rather than running to other countries with wrong stories (more cartoons than published) and whipping emotions.
Though they have already succeded in painting Muslims intolerant worldwide already....

Re: Danish Muslims file suit over Muhammad cartoons

as far as I know some court has already given verdict in denmark and as per their constitution it's oke..... religion being ridiculed theory is protected by constitution there .. unless they change the constittuion nothing can be done.. anyway this is the right way to go about things sense prevailed after all the mayhem

Re: Danish Muslims file suit over Muhammad cartoons

Muslims have lost the moral argument. There is no redemption in trying the "legal" way now. They have ganlanized most of the European populace against them. They are just going to isolate themselves further.

Re: Danish Muslims file suit over Muhammad cartoons

About time that Danish Muslims should forgive and forget this particular incident. The more they hammer on it, the worse it would become.

However they should start working on an effort to prevent similar fiascos in the future. Muslims ought to understand that the Danes have every right to question the role of Muslims and Islam in their country.

Some of these "questions" will be decent and thought provoking and others may be "indecent" and still thought provoking. Danish Muslims should not try to pick the axe and kill the damn person who may raise such questions.

Looking back to the "Mohammad" related drawings, the reaction of Danish Muslims must include condemnation of terrorism in the name of Islam. I mean any terrorism, no questions asked.

This is the only way to show to the Danes, that their lives will not be threatened by "tribal" reactions.

So after a month, the lion wakes up from his sleep??

Re: Danish Muslims file suit over Muhammad cartoons

Freedom of the press and freedom of speech are most definitely not meant for abusing. What's an apology if they still justify it giving 'freedom of speech' for an excuse?

Re: Danish Muslims file suit over Muhammad cartoons

Abuse is subjective, and speech being subjective is the exact reason why freedom of speech should exist. So, to the contrary abuse is the reason for freedom of speech.

Re: Danish Muslims file suit over Muhammad cartoons

'Freedom of speech or expression' is not absolute in itself. It has to be within boundaries of reason and aims that are legitimate and the way you use this freedom should be in accordance with your legitimate aims. So when you say you can't abuse them it means you cannot use this freedom for antagonizing a particular group on unfounded grounds, defamation, or any other purpose which may result in violence and hurt.

Re: Danish Muslims file suit over Muhammad cartoons

This is what SHOULD have been done in the first place hopefully we will see a positive outcome from this.

Re: Danish Muslims file suit over Muhammad cartoons

eventhough it’s OK according to the Danish laws, Danish government has the moral obligation to apologize. Plus, I heard on a TV show that the Danish government/prime minister refused to meet to a group of diplomates from Muslim countries to discuss this issue. So they have responded arrogantly, not sensibly regarding this issue.

There is a world of difference between their and our moral values.

Re: Danish Muslims file suit over Muhammad cartoons

This lawsuit is pointless....

After the embassy burning, the message from Al Qaeda and the Boys, and deaths of protesters, this is too little too late...

And what is the point of filing a law suit anyways??

Can Jews file a law suit against Egypt when they showed that anti-semetic movie, "The horseman without a horse", which the arabs basically took the anti-semetic book, Chronicles of the Elders of Zion and turned into a truth...

Or when Saudi Arabia and many other Arab countries teach that book as fact in class to stereotype Jews and Christians....

Don't you think that Muslims have brought this on themselves.

What is a typical non-muslim to think when this type of TV shows are shown on Arab and Muslim TV, or when Suicide bombings if it kills Jews is ok, etc...

For example, when the Jordan suicide bombings occured, Queen Rania said, why are they killing muslims.., so In other words she said if they killed non-muslims its understandable...

Shouldn't our religious leaders take a moral stand agaisnt such behaviour...

And shouldn't we stop Arabizing Islam and stop adapting Arab customs into Islam...

We need to grow up....

Islam is a religion of Peace.

But unfortunately, today's muslims are uneducated and don't know the history of Islam that it lived in peace with Christians and Jews...

There was no conspiracy theory of the Jews trying to take over the world back in July 7, 1099 when Muslims and Jews fought side by side against the Crusader armies in Jerusalem...

What Muslims need to do is...

1 - Stop stereotyping Jews and Christians
2 - Condemn terrorism in all forms
3 - Educate the masses in science, math and not just religion
4 - Give Freedom of religion
5 - Condemn State sponsored terrorism when it occurs such as Kashmir or Chechenya and take a moral stand against those countries. For example, why is Hamas going to Moscow when Russia has killed over 250,000 Chechens since 1994? Why do Arab countries and Iran have stronger relations with India than Pakistan, even though India has killed over 100,000 muslims since 1989.

Some thoughts to ponder....

Re: Danish Muslims file suit over Muhammad cartoons

Focusing specifically on the case, Muslims made a mockery of Islam and Muslims by resorting to violent attacks and going haywire.

What Danes did was terrible. Muslims in Denmark should've directly taken it to the court at the time; however, Muslims across the globe just stooped to the level of the Danish cartoonists, if not lower because of the violent protests.

I don't see much use now. We've lost face and integrity by reacting in an unjustified manner.

I don't know if it's already been done, but the sane Muslim leaders across the globe need to come out and condemn it and try to get the message across that it (violent protests) isn't exactly part of Islam.

Re: Danish Muslims file suit over Muhammad cartoons

exactly and that's why they did it in their home not in saudi arabia

Re: Danish Muslims file suit over Muhammad cartoons

wrong information india has not killed peopl died in insurgency majority of them by the gun of socalled fredom fighters..

and another reason is if pakistan can expect ummah world to condone them after bangaldeshi massacre then why can't others around the globe..

btw less said aboutarab world better ..nto a single show goes by without proclaim jews are sons and daughters of pigs and how their complete annhilation si must for day fo judgement.......

Re: Danish Muslims file suit over Muhammad cartoons

I love ignorance. It can so easily be proven stupid.

  1. The issue started in Sept. Peaceful protests were then.
  2. October 12 Muslim countries want to discuss the matter peacefully. The PM of Denmark refuses to discuss the matter.
  3. The OIC all 54 countries call for talks. The Danes again refuse.
  4. December sparks are inflamed again. 4 Countries boycot Denmarks goods.
  5. Jan in 3 weeks due to the Boycott denmarks loses 500 million dollars in profits. Not revenue profits. Forces more than 500 jobs losses.
  6. Denmark apologises.
  7. Jan Norway republishes comics. People get pissed off.
  8. Feb 5 more countries republish the comics.
  9. Feb 10 protests turn violent.

Now see when it started and when it went violent. 5 months. During those 5 months the Danes refuse to talk and only apologise after losing close to 1 billion dollars in trade in the Middle east.

Sadiyah by your comments i doubt you have lived in Europe or even know the political agenda of the European countries. I am sorry but you are utterly wrong in your assumption that the muslims people responded inappropriately.

5 months of desires to talk and they ignore us. This is what you get when you insult our faith and think its ok.

Secondly it is a violation of Danish law as danish law stipulates you can not publish anything that racist. It is the normal nazi clasue all european countries.

Re: Danish Muslims file suit over Muhammad cartoons

You can't show a blind way unless he is ready to hold the finger...

If Danish law provides for against publishing anything racist, why was not Danish courts used at first point.
Let me repeat this again, If there is something happening in one country how good, bad, ugly... they will not talk to other country for that, that's simple geoplotical dimplomacy about one's internal affairs... So it was dimplomatically wrong for Muslim countries to go and ask Danes to talk on this..
What moral right Muslim countries have to talk to Danes, when they have programs on own TV calling Christians Pigs and Sons of Pigs..
It was very diplomatic and mature for Danes to simple say 'NO Thankyou" we don't want to talk about our internal affairs. . Rather than starting a attack against Muslim world for interfering in its internal affairs...

Re: Danish Muslims file suit over Muhammad cartoons

Grumpy, yes, I've never lived in Europe. I've never been against the peaceful protests; however, the violent ones across the globe tarnished our reputation as Muslims.

I'm also aware that the case was going on for a while and Danish government paid no heed to it. Nonetheless, it does not justifiy the violent protests.

The case should've been taken to the Danish courts right away, or perhaps to the international court if such an option is/was available.
