Danish media student freed in Iran

**The authorities in Iran have released a Danish media student arrested last week, the state news agency Irna says.**Niels Krogsgaard, 31, was detained on 4 November at an anti-government protest that coincided with a rally marking 30 years since the US embassy seizure.

On Monday, Iran’s prosecutor general said Mr Krogsgaard had falsely claimed that he was a journalist when arrested.

Iran has tightened reporting rules since protests flared following the disputed presidential election in June.

Opposition supporters say the poll was rigged to ensure the re-election of President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

At least 30 protesters have been killed in clashes since the elections. Thousands have been arrested, and some 200 opposition activists remain behind bars. Three have been sentenced to death.

‘No permit’

Mr Krogsgaard had been working on an academic paper about Iranian politics when he was detained, the Danish Union of Journalists said.

“The Danish citizen arrested on the sidelines of illegal demonstrations has been freed,” Tehran’s chief prosecutor, Abbas Jafari Dolatabadi, told Irna on Tuesday.

“After completion of the investigation, the examining judge ordered the liberation of the accused and, after the approval of the prosecutor, this order was transmitted to Evin prison,” he added.

On Monday, Mr Dolatabadi rejected Mr Krogsgaard’s claim to be a journalist, saying “there were factors in his case which did not support it”.

“A journalist should have a permit,” he explained.

A Canadian, a Japanese and an Iranian journalist were also arrested at the anti-government protest, which the security forces dispersed with batons and tear gas.
