Damn Harry Potter

Re: Damn Harry Potter

errrr if you knew about her then it proves only one thing!

Re: Damn Harry Potter

lol … sooo true … she is rather fond of hearing herself talk.
no offense PCG, thats just how you come across.

Re: Damn Harry Potter

Zombie, I got suspicious of the comment, so I googled the author when I saw the comment. Simple. Not everything is a conspiracy.

Althea, it seems you are too. Only people who like to hear themselves talk like to comment on how others talk. Otherwise, you most likely would not have cared to make a comment. :k:

Re: Damn Harry Potter

Not at all, If I were, I would have started a million threads by now and reponded to a million others, often without having any real knowledge about the topics … you know … more of what you do

Re: Damn Harry Potter

without any real knowledge...

if you have better knowledge, you're more than welcome to contest me waves back

Re: Damn Harry Potter

No, No. X.

I asked because that is a very long list of books. Although I know some people who do still continue to read past grade school - that is books of their own choice…I do not know many. I myself haven’t gotten the time in college to do some pleasure reading on my own. I actually didn’t have much time in highschool either. I think I stopped reading fantasy in 10th grade, because I couldn’t find the young adult ones very much stimulating anymore.

When I tried looking in the adult sections, next to most were erotic in nature, and that’s not what I was into - I always thought that it ruined the storyline and cheapened the quality of the writing. Only adult fantasy books I managed to find good enough to finish were ones that I posted in this thread.

So, now, its summer, and I have a whole lotta extra time - I wanted to pick some new book up, but I don’t know where to start. I picked up this one called Swordspoint - I posted about it a while ago - and it turned out to be homosexual book porn. It was well written actually, but I couldn’t read much further after being slammed with a scene where the hero suddenly turns to his faithful sidekick and starts kissing him and luring him into bed…

shudders

That’s why I asked if you’ve read all that or if you pulled the list from some website. No need to take offense at it, since no offense was meant!

Re: Damn Harry Potter

Hehe,

Swordspoint is by Ellen Kushner, a noted feminist by the way. (Also won the World Fantasy Award, though the setting is pseudo-fantastic at best)

I tried reading it. The setting was interesting, the relationship between the narcotic junky and the flaming swordsman showed promise. But than the rather explicit homosexual scenes turned me off. Not to mention the story seemed to be stuck in a whirlpool - stagnating and meandering around without any apparant purpose.

I you are willing to trust my judgement, I can recommend to you a lot of very good (in a lot of people's opinions) fantasy books. Not all of them are necessarily explicit, without being young-adult in nature. Or alternatively I can link you to various fantasy forums around.

Here is the best one to start with,

www.sffworld.com

So tell me, if you don't mind that is, your preferences in the genre.

Don Quixote, though fantastish in nature, is generally considered a part of classical fiction.

Personally, I never did like Arthurian legends too much. That is why I haven't read either of T. H. White and Marion Zimmer Bradley.

Cheers. Hope it helps.

(P.S: I was not offended. But you did make several unsavoury generalizations about the fantasy genre. I am just asking you to try and be non-judgemental till you have read a sizeable chunk of books which fantasy fans consider 'good')

Re: Damn Harry Potter

errr, If I was you I would have never said that even if I had triple doctrate in English fantasy litrature! Knowledge is never about winning any contest!

Re: Damn Harry Potter

^ well said ... bravo

Re: Damn Harry Potter

No of course its not about contests, but Althea here is judging how much knowledge people here have - if she has issues with what people say, then why not correct the person or tell them where they feel they are wrong. What is with the snide remarks? Typically and totally desi.

Re: Damn Harry Potter

There is this new book out called The Historian by Elizabeth Kostova. It apparently took 10 years to write and is being praised by many people as well as being compared to The Da Vinci Code. It is set in Europe, pre and post-WWII, I believe, and deals with Dracula. I'm looking forward to reading this book. Sounds like great fantasy literature.

Re: Damn Harry Potter

Oh good God - Dracula stories suck. I hate vampire stories.

Re: Damn Harry Potter

I will stay away from anything that is comparable to the 'Da Vinci Code'.

Re: Damn Harry Potter

I looked at Asimov’s books at good ol’ B&N.

I knew I remembered that name from somewhere - he is totally SCI FI. :grumpy:

Gah. I want dragon tales, and stuff like that. Well, i’ll let you guys know when I find a good one that I’m enjoying.

Meanwhile, please do write up a review or opinion on any recent fantasy books that you’ve read.

Re: Damn Harry Potter

Please do…

Re: Damn Harry Potter

Okay, this is gonna sound so terrible, but bear with me here. Please understand that I had to go to work this morning, and I wanted to take some reading with me, and I hadn’t had a chance to go to the library this week.

I took my sister’s copy of harry potter with me…

:bummer:

The beginning is literally terrible, and she’s done a poor job in the first book of characterizations. But…I have to admit…the individually-designed magic wands, and the annoying kid who is getting his robe fitted along with Harry Potter…kinda is beginning to draw me in.

Either that or today was a real boring day.

Re: Damn Harry Potter

PCG, don't fight it ... embrace Harry ... accept the world of magic. You won't regret it.

Re: Damn Harry Potter

Did that PGC woman just say that she's only just read Harry Potter

How shocking!

Re: Damn Harry Potter

:bummer:

:snooty: I’m going to the library and getting some other book. :snooty:

Re: Damn Harry Potter

Who knows, it might actually work. That’s what got Tolkien started. He and some friends had their own gatherings and read to each other from their own work. They didn’t like many books so they decided to start writing the kind of book they would want to read by themselves!
