So had my first cervical smear test today…god what a mission…I kept tensing up…so they struggled to do it…it kept hurting man!!!
Have to go on wed now and they will try again…
anyone else had this experience or am i the abnormal one?

You are not the only one!... They say that even every healthy woman have to do it atleast once a year..

In UK, they do one for anyone over 25 every 3-5 years...thank god...hopefully after this one wont need one for a while...its so uncomfortable

I remember feeling horribly violated the first time. I still hate it. In the US they say to do it every year :/

Just try relaxing your pelvic muscles and not tensing up..........**

I have been checking online and it seems like a lot of ladies find it painful..maybe after childbirth it gets easy?

I think the more tense you are, the more painful it will be. Just try your best to relax and breath. And be sure to tell your doctor when its painful. Like someone said, its supposed to be uncomfortable, but not painful. Hope it gets better for you

It depends on your OB/GYN.... I finally found one who keeps me so distracted (by chatting) and does it so quick that its just a little uncomfortable and I don't dread getting it done anymore.

The nurse told me that because they are struggling to use speculum they will get another nurse to try who has been doing this for many years now....and said she may just use her fingers....i dnt knw how that is going to work?! :S has anyone had one using fingers... :s
I wonder what happens if you cant have one done....
im so dreading my next one!!!

That is exactly the attitude that makes it painful..........I'm not saying its a fun thing , I'm only advising you to relax and not let your fears get the better of you .........
I've performed a cervical smear for loads of patients and I've seen both types of patients , those that Listen and try to implement what the doctor is telling them during the procedure and have minimal discomfort and those who are not willing to listen at all and have already decided they WILL have pain before even getting on the examination coach .
If you are interested in Listening ....PM me and i'll tell you what to do to make it less painful.....if you've already decided its gonna be PAINFUL , then I really can't advise you further .

sheyn is right. It should be no more then uncomfortable if handled AND performed right.
I will use baby speculum for my particularly freaked out pts and/or virgins 
… you can request one … however some docs may refuse as it really does limit the visual field/access.
Hopefully your doc speaks to you during the process … Listen and do your best to follow. good luck :flowerz:

TabuB .. there are hundreds of women / girls totally with u on this one:k:.. yes.. many have been there and u just have to RELAXXXXXXX and not tense.. gud luck x

Its understandable to be tense during a pap smear if you are not sexually active. As everyone said, try to be relaxed and just remind yourself that it is an important medical producer.
However, if you are sexually active and the test still hurts and is painful then you should voice your concern to the doctor. In that case intercourse may be painful too and you should talk to you doctor.

mine have never hurt either... maybe it depends on how gentle the dr is? mine wil warm up the metal thingy that goes inside... she wil warm up her hands... put lots of lubricant on the metal thingy too... and i dont feel a thing.
and she also says.. let your muscles relax.. the more tense you are.. the more its gonna hurt... just like child birth.
