Re: dallas texas
where is your friend moving from? that would put how the desi lifestyle there is in context.
Re: dallas texas
I think Dallas is as desi as it can get here in America . But don't quote me . I am not an expert and neither lived there :D
Re: dallas texas
Maybe not as Desi as NYC or Chicago but it might be in top 10 most desi metros of USA
Re: dallas texas

oh and to answer
shalwar qameez vs jeans- in general or in desi social settings. if you mean in general out and about, it is there, ladies wear it in malls and stuff..in community it depends on social circle.
desi population is large, as TLK noted it is one of the desi hubs, NYC, chicago, houston, bay area and LA being other ones some parts of NJ and VA/MD also. so compared to them the population may seem smaller or the same, moving from some place like pittsburgh u will think u are in desiville.
many halal meat shops and several masajid. also radio shows, newspapers etc
Re: dallas texas
I did not live in dallas but i lived in DFW metroplex. there are a lot of desis here, and it does not matter what you wear. there is halal meat available, usually in Arab stores. also there is a good desi restaurant in Irving that I know of. its called Haveli. another good one is in carrolton and is called Bar-B-Q tonite. dont know if both of them are open or not. i am talking about 7-8 years ago.
but if your friend is marrying someone from there, then i am sure he can give her a better picture.
Re: dallas texas
BBQ tonite is still open. I ate there recently.
Dude, I thought it was desi central compared to what we have in south florida.
I like that there are more families there, and it doesn't seem they're too backwards either. No ghettos for ultraconservatives to hide in like devon in Chicago, etc. I never once saw anyone wandering around in shalwaar kameez, though. Except at the desi stores.
Dude, seriously, why not just wear American clothes? It's not haraam. Urgh. Such a turn off to see women in shalwaar kameez's on the street. Fobby.
^lol I dunno abt turn off, where we are from in the USA its quite a norm to wear desi clothes...but everybody has there own preferences just inquiring in terms of jahez shopping and stuff if desi clothes are even gonna come in handy, but i guess it depends on social circle true taht. anybody here from dallas? is it easy to make friends and merge into a desi circle? or is it everybody know everybody typa deal?
Re: dallas texas
In Dallas area, shalwar qameez, besides desi places is not so commonly worn. Men specially do not wear desi clothes unless they go to friends or relatives.
But there are resturaunts like BBQ tonight, Al-Markaz (two best places) and others. FunAsia is a good hang out place too, with desi movie theatre. But too much Indian in style. They do not serve beef I think. Not sure if it is halal serving place. One can google other places. Haveli is probably the oldest in Irving (west of Dallas) and food not so hygienic as other places.
Very few arabic muslim places to eat, but mediterranian and non-muslim arabs have restaurants with belly dancing...
Dallas is not like Houston. Much cleaner and even though families are mixed mostly educated and professionals. Cricket team is very organized there.
East of Dallas (Garland city) has muslim school I think Brighter Horizon. All other schools nationwide follow their curriculum and people move in Dallas area just beacuse of this school from everywhere. Very organized and upscale school.
Lots of Masjids of different fiqah and biggest one and most organized, is in Richardson (north Dallas).
Great places in downtown to eat, malls (with big ice skating arena) and roads are clean and wide. People just do not drive as good than other states. They seem to not use rearview mirror. They love left lane driving at below speed limit or exactly at the speed limit. So one has to pass them from right lane! They may hit the brake if you come close to them, so beware!
You may be considered a whimp if you do not own SUV or a pick up truck! Family Van is 'not so popular'.
You must say 'Ya all" Not 'Hey guys!
Many lakes and boating places. Horse riding, Rodeo, Six Flags, Race Track for Nascar (Northwest of Dallas), etc. Coke, Ice Tea or Dr Pepper is more popular than Pepsi.
