Daily progress documentation .. how do you do it?

Okay, so I am in my research phase where documenting everything is important else you’ll forget the minute details about what you did the next morning if you don’t pen it down. I usually have to copy and paste useful links and lines of code that I find handy, the course of action that I had to take to make a particlar program run etc. Thought of trying to update my progress in a Word file and a latex file, but I don’t kind of like documenting it there. I also use mytomatoes.com which works on a simple pomodoro technique and let you add what you did in the 25 minutes of work before a 5 minute break, but that has limited word count ( hardly 4 lines of text).

I discovered an online tool Penzu where you can update your daily journal and is pretty much upto my liking (you have to become a ‘PRO’ for better options though) but I was wondering if you know of any better progress monitoring tools for compiling your findings that come free?
