first bhutto gave up under mullah pressure and finally allowed mullahs to have their way by declaring ahmadis non-muslims as well as taking many other steps to make the society 'islamic". that was the start. Mullahs realized that they can win against the state by creating pressure even though they had never won anything in elections. not to mention, Bhutto courted mullahs way too much while drafting 1973 constitution … Bhutto will forever be remembered in history for his weak behavior against mullahs. thanks for destroying the social fabric of our society Bhutto.
then came zia regime…state establishment especially army Establishment under zia regime created, nurtured, and flourished the toxic narrative, which khursheed nadeem has listed above, for decades and inculcated this into our army psyche as well as into our syllabus and thus polluted whole generations. hatred and intolerance against yahood, hanood and ahmadis reached to another level. i remember hamid gul and many other army leaders openly talking about establishing some sort of Islamic kingdom by wining Afghanistan and then extending it to central asia…they called pakistan army muslim army.
raheel sharif is now trying to reverse the damage but it is not easy plus we need intellectually driven counter narrative by state…but this govt is useless. PPP is useless as we saw. PTI has not done anything either in KPK from counter narrative standpoint
