What is this and how is it performed? Has anybody ever gotten this done before?

Peace white light,

'Daam' means 'to blow' and blow is taken from breath. Its performed as per situation. Like before we go to bed, we read Ayat ul Kursi or any surah then blow it on our hands and rub the whole body. Some blow on water or food etc., after reading so and so surah for the purpose of shifa (good health). blowing can be done by ourself or by any other person too. Below is a hadith in this regard.

Book 'Military Expeditions led by the Prophet (pbuh) (Al-Maghaazi)' of Sahih Bukhari Hadith No. 714

*Narrated 'Aisha: Whenever Allah's Apostle became ill, he used to recite Al-Muawidhatan (i.e. the last two Suras of the Qur'an) and then blow his breath and passed his hand over himself. When he had his fatal illness, I started reciting Al-Muawidhatan and blowing my breath over him as he used to do, and then I rubbed the hand of the Prophet over his body. *

The performance of such action (blow breath on water, food, hands, body etc) is called 'dum (blow)' karna.

Ruqyah is commonly translated in English as “incantation”.
