Daal Cheat Sheet

I am completely ignorant when it comes to the different kind of daaliaN. Often when asked which daal to cook, I am usually clueless. The two I can tell are chanay ki daal (because it looks like half cut chick peas) or sabat massar (I think they are the black round one). Otherwise I wouldn’t know if it is moong, mash or whatever.

So, can someone describe the difference, pictures would come handy and also if the nutritional values are known and what a specific daal is best eaten with?

Re: Daal Cheat Sheet

masoor ki daal is the orangy red one, tiny little discs. that and channa daal is all i know by name. Oh and ofcourse lobia.

showwy.

Re: Daal Cheat Sheet

lobia? lobia is a name of a type of green bean.

Re: Daal Cheat Sheet

ok...
moong: is tiny n small n yellow n moongy :D
arhar: is medium sized, YELLOW
masoor: is ORANGE
chanay ki daal: is bigger than arhar kinda browny...

n thats the major daals we cook
well i used to confuse myself when i ws a novice.. and so i labelled the jars and it HELPED so much

Re: Daal Cheat Sheet

Well, lobya is lobya, its not daal ... or I have never thought of it that way. Indians call it Rajma.

so bhenjee, whats the difference between arhar (the first time I have heard this name) and moong?

Re: Daal Cheat Sheet

ppl may not eat daal daal that much but i have heard form many that best cook is the one who can cook tasty daal. It sound easy to cook but its very hard to cook tasty daal

Re: Daal Cheat Sheet

lobia is not a daal? Oh the trauma! i didn;t know of any green lobia. I thought it was just red, black and the white one with the black dot on it.

Re: Daal Cheat Sheet

yeah, I have never heard of green lobya either.

I love to eat daal with vinegar soaked onions and ketchup. Ohhhhh!

Re: Daal Cheat Sheet

lobia and rajma are two different things.
rajma is known as kidney beans in angrezi.
lobia is creamy coloured with a black spot.

moong ki daal is pale yellow in colour and much smaller than arhar...it is oblong in shape.

arhar ki daal is the same colour as chanay ki daal but flatter.
chanay ki daal, when you put the split pieces together, forms more of a ball than arhar does.

masoor ki daal is orange except when it is whole; then the peel is brown.

maash ki dall is off-white in colour and oblong in shape. it is slightly larger than moon ki daal in size.

maash ki daal, still covered in it's peel is a very dark grayish, almost black colour.
it can also be bought in the peel but split -- we used to have khichree made of this daal.

more when I think of it....

Re: Daal Cheat Sheet

isn't maash ki daal also called urid? cuz that's what the packet says. i think. so maybe urid is the hindu version of maash. or am i mixing it up?

Re: Daal Cheat Sheet
