64 years today since the invasion of Normandy by the Allied Forces during WWII.
On D-Day 6 June 1944 thousands of young soldiers wrote history.
In true spirit of the profession of arms and the glory of a soldier and his sacrifice, let’s commemorate the soldiers, warriors, heroes, unsung heroes, young men with dreams, older men with families who went out and performed beyond the call of duty and thousands made the ultimate sacrifice; laid their lives while many others faced death and destruction each day.
War is never justified, its outcome never positive, but whatever war achieves on political diplomatic level has little to do with the acts of courage and bravery every minute by unknown men and women in uniform who are prepared to face the greatest threats in a stride.
War may be shunned, a soldier must be saluted.
And this D-Day lets commemorate one of history’s greatest military moments and invasions and pay tribute to the soldier.
Let’s discuss thoughts on WWII, D-Day, and anything else related at all. Even video games and movies about WWII!
12 SS panzer division the real heroes of the normandy campaign
D-day is highly overrated , wehrmacht was actually beaten by the red army in the east
german navy was practically nonexistant at the time, and luftwaffe was stretched to the limit
only big battles western allies fought with overwhelming superority on land /sea/air ] and won are from d-day thats why its famous
The German army, concentrated on superior arms & weapons, but these could not be replaced quickly enough to the ones they lost in battle.
Whereas the Russian army even though it suffered horrendious losses in material & men, their ability to suppliment their losses 'quantity' helped them to win against 'quality'.
Same reasons during the Vietnam war - americans had the quality, but vietnamese 'quantity won the war over 'quality'.
This has some lessons for Pakistan too, who has been trying to maintain a superiority in terms of weapons vis a vis India, but despite winning some battles, they always lose the war.
german resources were far fewer than soviets , furhtermore after 1943 germans were outclassed in quality AND quantitiy , only their men were superior i.e more experinced
germans had nothing to match the T-34/85 , IS-2 , Yak-3 ,La-7
viet pigs won the war as they fought an unconventional war against an enemy that had drilled for a armageddon like cold war
By attacking Russia, Germany blundered by starting two fronts. They over stretched their resources.
It was here that the roots of the 'cold war' of the 50's & 60's was laid, with Britian & US watching from the sidelines as Russia was being bled white. They kept making excuses & did nothing to relieve the presure on Russia.
Hitler had underestimated Russia. Russia lost over 20 million people, and eventually defeated Germany & captured Berlin.
Not too much credit is given to Russian contribution on winning the WW2, the reality is they turned the tide against the Germans by defeating them in Stalingrad, and thereby destroyed the myth of german invincibility. "Quantity over Quality".
^ I agree totally , but tide was turned at Kursk not stalingrad
after stalingrad germans were still able to mount offensives after kursk they were simply drained
but germans were confident after the way they trounced the russians in WW1 when with 1/5 of their army they along with austrians humbled the mighty russian army
Well my maternal grandfather fought in WW2 as part of the British army in Burma. He got a silver medal.
I see zxcvb,
Very nice to learn that! You should be proud of your grandfather.
What regiment/corps was he with and what rank?
Was he commissioned from IMA Dehradun and is he still around?
Do share some interesting details pls.
The Germans suffered their first setback when they were halted at the Gates of Moscow in 1941, then suffered their first major defeat at Stalingrad in 1942, then were bleed to death at Kursk in 1943 and were finally crushed in Bagration in 1944.
In Normandy, the Germans had 400,000 men in 2 Armies, 5th Panzer Army and 7th Army, while the Germans had over 4,000,000 men deployed in the East against the Soviets.
In the Summer of 1944, the Germans lost over 1,000,000 men in fighting. They lost 200,000 fighting the Allies in France and 800,000 fighting the Soviets in the East.
Its no question that it was the Soviet Union which defeated Germany.

I disagree. The T-34/85 was matched by the Tiger and the Panther, the King Tiger matched the IS-2, while the TA-152 was more than a match for the Yak-3 and La-7.
But the Russians were able to pour these forth in quantity. The Germans tried to constantly reinvent their technology to be one step ahead of their enemies; this led to them failing to keep up in standards and numbers. They had lots of factories producing lots of different things.
If the Germans had simply focused on the Panzer IV platform and nothing else, and simply focused on making very good BF-109s or FW-190s and nothing else, they may have had a chance.
In the end, the German quest for technical perfection doomed them.
The reasons the germans lost world war II is that Hitler diverted his 2nd and 3rd Panzer Armies from attacking Moscow in August 1941 and sending them to attack Leningrad and Kiev.
By the time the Germans were finished defeating the Soviets in the north and south, winter was drawing near
the Germans wasted 2 months by diverting troops, and thus when they began the attack on Moscow in October 1941, they had to race against time
The reasons the germans lost world war II is that Hitler diverted his 2nd and 3rd Panzer Armies from attacking Moscow in August 1941 and sending them to attack Leningrad and Kiev.
This is one of the best war strategy adopted against any invader, Russians made them to move away from Moscow, and they bought it, and yes this was the turning point of the war, if only Berlin have concentrated at Moscow, we all might have been posting in German language.
^ i was not counting ta-152 and king tiger and likes as they were so few that they cannot even be called the standard weapons of even the elite units
and simplicity of a design is also to be kept in mind something which the tigers and panthers did not have
....germany simply did not have the industrial capacity to match that of the allies no matter what they produce, at best they could have fought the red army to a stalemate in ukraine or poland.
but i agree that technical perfection plus hitlers interference doomed them.
if there was no hitler and a german field marshal a dictator of germany then germans wud have won. With the eccentric austrian corporal at the helm they did not have a hindu's chance heaven !
i think the biggest reason why germans lost war in the east was because they failed to gain the popularity amongst the non-russian slavic people because of their nutcase racial policies which alienated the population and saw the communists as the lesser of the 2 evils
which led to soviets exploiting the nationalism of the slavs to whip up support against the teutonic invaders
