there is a huge difference between western mafia and the bombay underworld. it’s nothing “cool” like the italian mafias we have all come to idolize. the bombay underworld has no flashy cars with packs of men in expensive suits and shiny guns. it’s a bunch of dirtball desis in the slums…with ultimately 2 real “dons”, one who lives in secrecy in karachi…and the other who lives in secrecy in malaysia/singapore/dubai. these “mafias” are nothing but 3rd world gangs, not organized crime syndicates like the sicilian and italian mobs. that’s why they’re called the “dawood gang” and the “rajan gang”.
extortion of a handful of bollywood producers, extraction of 5% fees on large real estate deals, and hijacking of delivery trucks is nothing. they’re all small-time criminal activities, just multiplied and compounded to create a large underworld. they all still remain in fear of the police (who they have not been able to bribe), and have never made any real penetration into the poltical world - which is where the real power lies.
oh really… No wonder, a couple of years ago, the Indian Government decided to seize some of Dawood’s property, and sell it away. The organized an auction and guess what…No one showed up.
