So while we have all these ‘important’ threads on elections going on, howsabout one on Cyprus’ referendum for unification.
Voting is today and results should be in soon. It’s already expected that the Greeks will turn down the plan in order to blackmail the Turks after they join the EU and reap all the subsidised goodness that comes with that.
I’ll come back later and add some more but for now I just wanted to put this thread out there. Here’s a link to get started: Cyprus unity plan heads for defeat
Well, no violence reported in all of it so I guess that's a good thing.
So what now for Turkey? They got shut out by the EU as a whole and now their side of Cyprus just got punked by the Greeks. Why should the Turks want to join a body that so obviously doesn't want them?
And how stupid is the EU really? They just adopted a Greek-only Cyprus! They're going to subsidize that sinkhole and have to bear the costs of further unity negotiations. They adopted half of a country in Cyprus but a country like Croatia or greater Turkey still can't join? Looks like America's role will be safe for a while, no matter how far it degrades.
The EU is dissapointed wwith the Greeks for rejecting it. Word is that the EU and the USA are looking into ways to help the Turkish Cypriots, now, since they've shown they want to be unified with the rest of Cyprus but that the Greeks are preventing it.
All of a sudden, the burden of Cyprus's division has suddenly been changed. Now, it's the greek cypriots, not the turkish ones, who look as though they are preventing Cyprus's reunion, and the international olitical situation may change to accomodate that.
Good point on the redirection of sympathies.. the Greeks seriously burned their international supporters. Azerbaycan says it will probably recognize the North, other Turkic states might as well.
There are a lot of good points made in the comments section of this thread: Cyprus says ‘Yes’ and ‘No’ Here’s one that might peak the interest of some Guppies here:
Finally, on Cyprus, the Greek Cyproites showed once again they are self-indulgent, short sighted fools of the worse kind, as well as having less political maturity than the Turks in fact. How else to explain the significant intervention of that mafia, the Greek Orthodox Church in Cyprus, with interventions saying a vote for the UN plan would damn voters to hell. I note by the way that the Islamophobes out there would have taken a similar intervention by a Muslim Imam as signs of the evilness of the Islamic world, etc. etc.
Somehow the Greeks always end up shooting themseleves in the foot - they have been doing that for 30/40 years now. Now the EU is lumbered with two Greek states, neither of which the rest really want , but will now have to put up with their tantrums and vetos.
Yeah, exactly.. Greece has been giving them enough headaches.. now there's Cyprus to be its echo chamber. So does Greek Cyprus get to veto any EU aid to the Turkish side now.. that'd be phenomenally stupid.
Yes, I think that Cyprus would have the power of veto when it joins the EU, but it would make itself hugely unpopular with the other 24 members (minus Greece possibly) if it did exercise it against the Turks. But the EU has got in just before and authorised a huge aid package for the “TRNC” and mandated that Greek Cyprus must allow trade from the north.
Anyhow, I think now a large group of nations i.e. Turkic/Muslim/OIC, members will afford official diplomatic recognition to the “TRNC” outright while others i.e. USA, EU etc will in effect trade with it in all respects, short of recognition.
Well I wouldn't be too sure about Muslim countries doing anything together to help each other - in this case recognition of N. Cyprus.
When (if) it comes to the crunch about Turkey in EU it will be the French who will veto it. Others may too, but the French are the main obstacle.
Not much happening in the headlines anymore. I've seen more articles (in print) about Turkey 'feeling the pressure' to recognize Greek Cyprus. Not so much talk of the others recognizing the Turkish side, hardly any news on the financial aid to the Turks (if any, I can't tell!), etc. I guess they're all being punks and trying not to offend the Greeks. I dont know why.. they deserve a swift kick in the balls, for this and screwing up the Olympics.
