Re: Cyclone/hurricane to hit Karachi

Here comes the rain!!

Re: Cyclone/hurricane to hit Karachi

Yes these are very heavy clouds. They are sure to fill the hub dam for a year. I do not know whether those small check dams on Malir river can endure it.

I think winds are not so fast. But rains could be heavy and they will clear quickly before 12 noon. But they going to be very flashy in the rivers

Re: Cyclone/hurricane to hit Karachi

So the storm has passed from Karachi but still raining in lower Sindh - Badin and Thatta.

‘Shah Ghazi to protect Karachi, as always

Karachi

Erected in the heart of Karachi in Clifton is the resting place of Abdullah Shah Ghazi, having a calming effect on every devotee entering it or passing by. Located near the sea, which has gone turbulent in the past few days as reports of a sea storm are developing every minute, the atmosphere inside the shrine is tranquil and people, oblivious to the developing news stories, silently move about praying and worshipping.

As the city braces itself for the forecasted cyclone, devotees at the shrine repeat their long held belief that no damage will be done to Karachi, warning or no warning.

Smiling calmly, Jahangir, an old man of 85 rubbishes the forecasts and said, “Previously there had been similar warnings about a cyclone coming towards Karachi but so far nothing has happened, and nothing will!” Sitting by his side is Jahanzeb, a 30 year old marketing manager who said that he came to the shrine often to pray for his ailing mother and sometimes just to feel at peace with himself. “Nothing will happen as I have a firm belief that the saint resting inside can move mountains, and as long his shrine is here we are protected.”

The chambers of the saint’s shrine were filled with hordes and hordes of people who came from far and wide to pray side by side, irrespective of their social or economic status. Ashraf, a caretaker of graves at the shrine, has worked day and night for the past 27 years. He has the same calm demeanor and nods his head sideways when asked what measures have been taken to protect the shrine from the forecasted sea storm. “We have got a strong backing from the saints in Karachi; especially Shah Ghazi Baba. He has always protected our city from a number of serious mishaps.”

A number of women hunched together to burn incense sticks show their interest to be spoken to as well. One of them, Hajra, said she has come all the way from Mohajir Camp and stressed eagerly that as long as people in the city have belief and faith on the almighty, nothing untoward can happen to it. Rubbishing the forecasts of the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) which she said are “false nine times out of ten anyways,” Hajra says that she has been visiting the shrine from the time she was a mere six-year-old. “You might not believe in these things but I do and I believe that Karachi is protected,” she said in a child like manner. A woman sitting by her side says she has come from Dubai in a two-week holiday and says that the shrine itself is near the sea and “I have heard from my elders that the sea does not have the gust to come towards the shrine, so we are protected by the mere presence of this shrine and many more who are built in the middle of the sea.”

Administrator Auqaf at the shrine Mohammed Nusrat Khan said that Karachi was at risk of a storm, “but it’s all thanks to our saints in the city who have protected us.”
