It can last forever, if that is what both parties want. The internet can be a stepping stone towards meeting and from that point becoming more serious about the relationship. This could lead to marriage and the whole 2.4 children/family set up.
Essentially it depends on the intentions of both parties. What they want and how they want to progress with the relationship. Any relationship is based upon two-sided interaction, care and love, so if that is present, there is no reason for it not to last.
