Cutting off Hands of the Thief

Cutting off Hands of the Thief

  1. As for the thief, both male and female, cut off their
hands. It is the reward of their own deeds, an exemplary
punishment from Allah. Allah is Mighty, Wise. Holy Quran,
    005.038

  2. But whoso repenteth after his wrongdoing and amendeth, lo!
Allah will relent toward him. Lo! Allah is Forgiving,
    Merciful.(005.039)

Enemies of Islam quote only verse 38 of surat Al-mada saying
how barbaric Islam is. They suppress verse 39 for forgiving.

First, note that punishment of cutting off hand is for thief -
not just any theft! Secondly, in the very next verse forgiveness
on repentance is prescribed.

These verses serve as guidelines in developing detailed laws
and practices. In countries where Islamic laws operate there are
varying punishments (jail, lashes) for theft but the maximum
punishment of cutting off hands is awarded only for incorrigible
cases. It is strange that invention of atom bomb and other
weapons of devastations of mankind are not condemned but a
deterrent for crimes is looked upon with scorn.

Al-Quran = Al-baqarah
11. When it is said to them: “Make not mischief on the earth,” they say: “Why, we only Want to make peace!”
12. Of a surety, they are the ones who make mischief, but they realise (it) not.

Asalamu alykum,

I think one the biggest problems is as you said people of no knowledge taking certain ayahs of the Quran w/out looking into their context. Whether it be jihad or ayahs pertaining women's modesty or inheritance etc. One of the most beautiful things about our deen is our sharia that is very flexible but is misunderstood not only by non-muslims but muslims as well. The concept of nipping the problem before a huge catasrophe happens is the most beautiful thing about our sharia. Wallahu A'lam
